Unit 3 reader: Fables
The decodable Reader for Unit 3 is called "Fables." It is comprised of decodable versions of famous fables, most of which are from the ancient Greek storyteller, Aesop. The stories in the CKLA program are 100% decodable, meaning they are made up entirely of spellings and Tricky Words introduced or reviewed quickly in class during previous lessons. Some of the fables the class will read include: "King Log and King Crane", "The Hares and the Frogs", "The Fox and the Grapes", and "The Dog and the Ox". With guidance, students will begin to write simple narratives retelling the stories they read. Key features that will be included in the writing are setting, description of the characters, and sequential events of the plot.
Science: Animals and Habitats
This domain will introduce students to the wonder of the natural world, focusing on the interconnectedness of all living things with their physical environment and with one another. Students will learn what a habitat is and will also learn to identify specific types of habitats and their related characteristics. Lessons will show how animals developed unique characteristics or features that enable them to specifically adapt to the climate and conditions of a given community. They will also be introduced to simple classifications of animals according to the types of food they eat (herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore) and will begin to understand the notion of a food chain.
Arctic Habitat
Children will learn the characteristics of the Arctic tundra habitat and Arctic Ocean habitat. They will explore how Arctic animals have adapted to these habitats.
Tropical Rainforest Habitat
Children will learn the characteristics of the tropical rainforest habitat. They will be introduced to humid weather, the layers of the rainforest, and animals that live in the Amazon rainforest.
African Savanna Habitat
Children will learn the characteristics of a grassland habitat and how grassland animals have adapted to their habitat. They will be introduced to how some animals coexist and the benefits of living together peacefully.
Math: 1.OA.C.6
Students will be adding and subtracting within 10. The purpose of the lessons this month will be to make a 10 to make addition easier. For example: 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4. Children will explore this strategy of making 10 by using a ten-frame mat and counters.
