Students Raise Money for Backpacks: Empathy, Gratitude and Taking Action!
Mr. Loughran's environmental studies students took on a second project(first was bees). Below is the letter they wrote on the Donor's Choose site. Donors included the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. As a result of their efforts there will be a couple dozen loaded backpacks with school supplies for students available via the local food pantry. At the end is a summary written by Tony.
My Environmental Science students are always excited to learn more about the environment and work to study and solve issues at the local level. My students do a great deal of field work and in-class presentations on environmental issues dealing with clean air, water, energy and food supply. However, they are also eager to get involved with the community, and give back as best and as frequently as possible.
For our class's second project we are focusing on helping the members of our community, particularly the students who face financial hardships. We believe that every member of our community should have the opportunity to learn with the necessary school supplies. Several of us have had the opportunity to work with younger students and alongside our peers who lack the means and tools for an education that all students deserve.
Sincerely,
Hanna, Kacy, Kennedy and Hannah
By working together to help needy students in our school district, it is my hope that the juniors and seniors in my environmental science class will gain valuable experiences in team work, cooperation, project development, community service and empathy. The Helping Hands project is a worthwhile project that looks to provide needy students with school supplies when they start school in the fall. Today more than ever our students need to learn these important life skills and soft skills to be solid caring citizens in the world we live in. By putting together backpacks with school supplies we hope to make the each student's day a little brighter and less stressful.

Building life-ready skills in Social Studies
The Choices Program is non-profit organization based at Brown University. They develop curricula on current and historical issues and offer professional development for educators.
Choices materials draw connections between historical events and contemporary international issues.
In each unit, a central activity challenges students to consider multiple viewpoints on a contested issue. Students examine the historical, cultural, and political background of the issue to prepare a coherent presentation.
Follow-up discussion demands analysis, and evaluation of conflicting values, interests, and priorities. Ultimately, students are expected to formulate persuasive arguments and express their own views.
