The modern library....
where reading is driven by interest, not level.
EdCampSTL
It sounds like you would enjoy an EdCamp! EdCamps, also known as UnConferences, are set up in an innovative format allows the knowledge and interests of those in attendance to lead the conversations of growth. Attendees indicate what topic(s) they would like to discuss. The facilitators gather the data and notice common topics. They then assign a specific location/room for that topic to be discussed. Attendees go and share what they know, learn what's happening in other schools or content areas, and listen! There are no presenters, no PowerPoints, and no handouts. You vote with your feet -- if the topic turns out to not be relevant to you, get up and change locations! Best of all, EdCamps are FREE. So why not try one?
Connected Learning STL is hosting their 5th annual EdCampSTL on Saturday, February 6th from 8:00a-3:30p at Pattonville High School. Breakfast and lunch are provided, and you can even receive Parkway PD credit! Give it a shot and register here! http://www.connectedlearningstl.org/edcamp/
(For Parkway PD credit, also register for the course in PEERS)

2016 Newbery Honor
So begins a new adventure of Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read, and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan—and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother?

Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo.

In 1914, Harry Colebourn, a veterinarian on his way to tend horses in World War I, followed his heart and rescued a baby bear. He named her Winnie, after his hometown of Winnipeg, and he took the bear to war.
Harry Colebourn's real-life great-granddaughter tells the true story of a remarkable friendship and an even more remarkable journey--from the fields of Canada to a convoy across the ocean to an army base in England...
And finally to the London Zoo, where Winnie made another new friend: a real boy named Christopher Robin.
Here is the remarkable true story of the bear who inspired Winnie-the-Pooh.

Along with esteemed illustrator Bryan Collier, Andrews has created a lively picture book autobiography about how he followed his dream of becoming a musician, despite the odds, until he reached international stardom. Trombone Shorty is a celebration of the rich cultural history of New Orleans and the power of music.

Waiting is a big part of childhood—waiting in line, waiting to grow up, waiting for something special to happen—but in this book, a child sets the stage and pulls the strings. Timeless, beautiful, and deeply heartfelt, this picture book about imaginative play, the seasons, friendship, and surprises marks a new pinnacle in Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes's extraordinary career.

Despite fierce prejudice and abuse, even being beaten to within an inch of her life, Fannie Lou Hamer was a champion of civil rights from the 1950s until her death in 1977. Integral to the Freedom Summer of 1964, Ms. Hamer gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention that, despite President Johnson’s interference, aired on national TV news and spurred the nation to support the Freedom Democrats. Featuring luminous mixed-media art both vibrant and full of intricate detail, Singing for Freedom celebrates Fannie Lou Hamer’s life and legacy with an inspiring message of hope, determination, and strength

But how can you ACCESS this wealth of knowledge?? First, you must make an account or update the one you have, learn the lingo, and curate information! (More info in the Archived Newsletters).
Next, start contributing to a live chat!
- Find a chat about a topic you are interested in. There's a comprehensive list at https://sites.google.com/site/twittereducationchats/education-chat-official-list, or look for which chats others are joining! Some recommendations are...
#edchat (education chat)
#edtech (educational technology)
#digcit (digital citizenship)
#kinderchat #1stchat #2ndchat etc. (chat for teachers of those grades)
#growthmindset
#makered (makerspace education)
#MOedchat (Missouri education chat)
#titletalk (discussing current children's lit)
#sunchat or #satchat (education chats on Sunday or Saturday mornings)

- Log into Twitter at the right time, search for the hashtag, and join in! There will be someone moderating the chat. They will post when it's time to begin, and most chats start with an introduction. Then the moderator will post a question starting with Q1, Q2, etc. You will post your answer starting with A1, A2, etc. Read others' responses and comment, favorite, or share as you see fit! Follow those who you really enjoy hearing from.
- You can chat on the sidelines at soccer practice, while you are lying down on the couch, or most anywhere! If you keep missing your chats, check out #edslowchat. These chats take place over a week versus an hour.
