Distracted Driving occurs when teens use electronic devices to tweet, chat, text or talk on their IPhone, Blackberry or other mobile devices. The three main types of Distracted Driving are Manual, Visual, and Cognitive. The first type of distraction is manual. Manual Distraction means that you’re taking your hands off the wheel to type, text or tweet. The second type of distraction is visual. Visual Distraction occurs when you take your eyes off the road. The third type of distraction is cognitive. Cognitive Distraction occurs when you take your mind off of driving.
Manual distractions can occur when someone pulls out their phone out of their pocket, purse, or book bag. When they remove the hands from the wheel, they can lose control of the car and crash, injuring themselves and others. Visual distracted can occur when you looking at something other than the road in front of the car. When focusing on something other than road, they might hit a person or an animal causing injury to something. Cognitive distractions can occur when someone thinking about something than driving. When they lose focus from the road, they might damage their car, and may cause injury to those around them.
“To sum it up, the latest research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2008, there were 5,870 fatalities, and an estimated amount of 515,000 teens were injured in police-reported crashes in which at least one type of distraction was reported,” said the researcher from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Many teens in the United States have been careless about the dangers of distracted driving! You need to know that some of these crashes are traumatic!
