EMS S2 Week 18 Announcements
The Know-whats and the Know-hows at Estacada Middle School
End of Year Logistics
With the end of the school year approaching, there are a few items to keep in mind as we close the year down and plan for the upcoming academic year. The students' last day will be Tuesday, June 12. The day before, on Monday, June 11, your student will be cleaning out their locker at the end of the day. Please be prepared for items to be taken home. Students will also be completing a "check out" form which will ask students to turn in all school-issued books, Chromebooks, school-issued locks, and materials. This is done to help students, staff, and families to be organized.
The last day of school for 6th and 7th graders will be different from the last day for 8th graders. 8th graders will be celebrating their year with a trip to Oaks Park. 6th and 7th graders will spend their day at school. During the day, students will participate in field-day activities such as frisbee golf, will view a movie in the auditorium, and will give back to our school through beautification activities. There is a lot to celebrate and more to prepare for our upcoming school year. Go Tigers!

STEM Night: A Success
Thank You for attending Estacada Middle School's inagural, first-ever STEM Night (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). We had fun reading student Inquiry Projects, participating in dissections, attempting to engineer a balloon-powered boat, eating insects, holding cockroaches, exploring the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies, and more. I am very proud of our Science PLC and the effort our students put into their projects. Students followed the Scientific Method, made claims, provided evidence, and supported with reasoning. And, students practiced their graphing skills. We are up to good. Please see the images below from STEM Night. Go Tigers!
Visiting with Cockroaches
A local entomologist (not in the picture) volunteered her time to show students how to hold cockroaches.
Eating Crickets
There were three different flavors of crickets available to try. No: it did not taste like chicken nor potato chips. :)
Salamander Dissections
Students were able to follow a guide, alongside Ms. Rickard's help, to dissect and look into a salamander.
Dredging for Gold
These student built their own example of a tool used to separate large earthly objects from smaller objects. Ingenious!
Engineering Puzzles
Students and families attempted to solve engineering-esque, Math-esque, and puzzle-esque tasks for prizes.
Inquiry Projects
Students in 6th, 7th, and some from 8th grade were tasked to complete an Inquiry project. Students strengthened their Scientific Method skills.
Inquiry Projects
The design of the Inquiry Project elicited students to graph, present, defend, provide evidence, and use the Scientific Method. We are on our way and looking to grow more.
Community
Families spent time with each other while at a school event. It is important to learn with your student and as a community. Go Tigers!
Microscopes
Families and students had an opportunity to look into microscopes at a variety of different objects like insects, skins, and mold.
Progress Reports and Final Grades.
Last Friday, June 1, the last Progress Report update went out to families. Please reach out to me if you have not yet received yours. The next report you will receive, will be your student's final grades for the 2017-2018 academic year. Within this report, you will see a side-by-side comparison of S1 and S2 proficiency indicators of each Essential Learning Standard. You will also see comments made by each teacher per each class. And, you will see your student's proficiency on the Characteristics of a Successful Learner standards (See below). Please let me know if you need anything or if you have any questions about your student's outcomes. Go Tigers!
EMS Students Deliver Produce
The photo here was taken of a couple of EMS students from Mrs. Juker’s Service Learning elective class, who picked and delivered spinach and sugar pea pods from our school garden to our cafeteria kitchen, for our school’s salad bar. This class meets weekly on Tuesdays in their school garden to grow, harvest and walk to the Estacada Area Food Bank (14# today!) to deliver produce, as well as delivering to their school cafeteria.
Science Labs: Frog Dissections
Ms. Rickard's Science Labs class performed a Frog dissection last week. The hands-on, collaborative work done in all science classes is supporting improved interpersonal communication skills. Student exploration of the frogs' anatomy and structure may inspire one of our students to, someday, be a surgeon, veterinarian, teacher! Go Tigers. See the images below!
