Counselor Corner
Our children are now at home more than ever before. They are away from school and friends which might be emotionally hard for them. While this is an important protective factor our children might be experiencing feelings of sadness, frustration, and/or anxiety. One technique we can use to help our kids with these emotions could be to assist them with addressing negative thoughts. You can start with speaking with your child about their feelings and allow them to vent. After listening to their concerns, then help them find alternative ways to look at things. If your child is stuck focusing on the negative offer them different ways to look at this situation. You can focus on the fact that instead of being “stuck” at home they are “safe” at home. You can also encourage your child to explore the things they love and reach out to friends.
Another way to teach re-framing negative thoughts is the idea of optimism. Here is a YouTube link that you can allow your child to watch explaining optimism:
If students are having difficulties and need to speak to the Sam Houston Counselor they can use the link below. Mrs. Hughes is always available to assist.

Procedures for Packet Pick-Up
We are asking that parents follow the procedures listed below to ensure the safety of all of our families:
*Wear a non-medical mask, cloth face covering while picking up materials.
*Practice Social Distancing and remain at least 6 feet away from others.
*When picking up packets, try to only touch the packet that you are taking.
Staying Healthy by Practicing Social Distancing
The wellbeing of our students and families is important to us. You can help by talking to your child about healthy practices to prevent the spread of illness such as
Wash your hands frequently
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Need TECHNOLOGY?
If you don’t have technology at home and would like to borrow one from the campus please use the link to request a device. Since we have a limited number of devices, we are providing only one device per family. We generally need about 24-48 hours to fill the request. We will contact you when they are ready for pick-up. Our scheduled pick up dates are Tuesday and Thursday. If devices are not picked up in timely manner the device will be assigned to another family in need.

TEACHER ASSISTANCE
Although our school is closed our teachers are still working on ways to educate our students. If you need help with any of the assignments that are being sent home, we have teachers that can assist your child. You can either reach out to your child’s teacher for assistance or you can send an email to contacthouston@conroeisd.net and we will have a teacher contact your child to assist them with their assignments.
Distance Learning
These grades will be placed in the gradebook like normal. Parents with Parent Access accounts will be able to access these grades as normal.
If you should have any questions about grades, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher.

Virtual Title I Math game Night
We didn’t get to have our Math Game Night last month, so we have decided not to let social distancing get in the way of having it now! Mark your calendar for a virtual game night next Wednesday night, April 29, at 6:00 p.m.
To participate you will need to pick up one game packet for your family at school beginning Monday morning. If you can’t pick up a packet at school, you may use the attached Virtual Math Game Night Activities, along with a deck of cards and one dice. Then at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, log onto the Houston Elementary Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HoustonCISD/.
During our Virtual Math Game Night we will be live on Facebook and teach you how to play each of the games with your family. There will be a drawing for prizes for families that participate during the evening by posting pictures of your family participating in the activities. Prizes will be baskets of snacks for you to enjoy during the time you are at home.
Please pick up your game packet and join us for a fun evening!
