Mrs. Foley's Counselor Corner
October/November, 2020
Dear Suamico Elementary Parents/Guardians,
It is with great pleasure that I present to you the School Counselor Corner! I have always wanted to create a newsletter that provides detailed information on what your children has been learning in Life Skills class, resources for parents, and ideas on how to support your children's social/emotional wellness. It is no surprise that as parents we are all looking for relevant ideas to address the unique needs of our children. Overall, my mission is to provide a diverse, interactive, and engaging learning experience for all students at Suamico Elementary, while also breaking down barriers to learning and meeting the needs of the whole child. In addition, I do not work alone, I am blessed beyond words to work with an excellent and experienced staff that includes teachers, special education, specialists, administration, and student services staff. Please take some time to explore my newsletter and reach out with any questions, concerns or needs. I am one part of your child support team here at Suamico Elementary and I look forward to working with you! (Please feel free to check back weekly for updates as I'll be updating this newsletter for the whole month of November.)
Taking Social/Emotional Learning Outdoors
Life Skills Class
During the beginning of the 2020/21 school year we were forced to think differently when it comes to learning. Therefore, Life Skills classes were held primarily outside whenever possible. The kids LOVED this (and so did I!). We began the year with an Introduction to the School Counselor activity, celebrated National Dot Day, and reinforced the 7 Habits of Happy Kids, which classroom teachers are introducing to all K-4 students in the district. The children have been learning about Feelings and how they present in our bodies as 'sensations' during virtual Life Skills classes. We read the book, "Listening to my Body" written by Gabi Garcia (see video below) which discusses how important it is to listen to our bodies to better know how to respond with care and kindness. This week we will be discussing strategies to self-regulate and deepen our sense of well-being. I REALLY enjoy seeing the students on our Life Skills Google Meets!! It fills my bucket right up! Each child will receive an invitation from me for the Life Skills classes with a meet code and it will also be highlighted in their classroom teachers Week at a Glance agenda.
