Resource Schedule
If you have not received your schedule for your student, please let Joe, Jessica, me, or Sue know right away.
Passes
On Monday you will begin the sign out sheets we discussed during our faculty meeting.
In addition, please make sure you review with students and are using the following procedures when sending students out.
- Restroom - Stand at the door and monitor students going down and coming back to make sure they are not going anywhere else. Talk to your students about using the restroom that is closest to your classroom.
- Library - Can they check out a book for the classroom library instead? Jill is not always in there or it may not be a time she is free to check out a book to them.
- Nurse - Fill out the nurse pass to send with students. Please only send situations where a student is truly ill. Nurse Judy is seeing a lot of students multiple times a day for things that are not really anything she can help. For example: band-aide, loose teeth, tiredness, etc. There is very little that we can do for most things. If you think they have a fever, they are bleeding, they are vomiting, they have hit their head; definitely send them. If you have a student that is asking you go go multiple times a day, please contact their parents about concerns.
- Office - We are seeing an increase in students sent to the office asking for copies of things. While we understand being short a copy or two here and there, we are having things sent up and asking for whole class sets. The office is extremely busy and they really do not have time to make copies of things. Please make sure this is being taken care of during your plan time. Please do not send students up that say they need to come talk to the office. Ask them what they need, to determine if they really need to go up. We have several that are coming up and asking to call home. Why do they need to call home?
If I Have Extra Students...
If we have a student for ISS:
- They sit in the office during specials
- They have lunch in the office
- They sit in the office during recess
- They dismiss with YOUR class, following your classes normal dismissal routine
If we have a student(s) because a class was split:
- They go to specials with YOUR class
- They eat lunch with YOUR class
- They go to recess with YOUR class
- They can help in your classroom IF they finish the work from their classroom
- They dismiss with YOUR class, following your classes normal dismissal routine
If you have any additional questions, please let me or Sue know.

Kelly's Coaching Korner
Jan Richardson spoke at the Reading Recovery conference. Here are my takeaways from her session on Word Work:
“Word Study belongs most powerfully in guided reading”.
“Stick to the procedures that are research based--do these procedures with fidelity.”
“Students who know less than 40 letters, activities must be: multi-sensory, effective, efficient, do not teach these kids sight words.”
“ABC tracing--do not say letter sound, research recommends the name and linking to picture. Don’t guide child’s hand, remind top to bottom”
“Teach a New Sight Word--do not tweak, you want them to know the word as a complete unit.”
“Make sure YOU are not doing all the work, kids need to be saying the words slowly and doing all steps of the procedure”.
Fluent readers need work study too. Jan has a new book out that addresses quick word study for high readers: Make an Affix word, Write an Affix word, Read an Affix word. I’d like to share that information with you. If you are interested now, please let me know
I left Jan’s session proud of the work we have put in. She reminded me of the importance in her procedures and doing them with fidelity. Please continue to use your word study cards to support your implementation of word work. Many of you have asked me to model in your classroom. I’m happy to model guided reading for you-just ask:)
