From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
I'm sure by now we are all beginning to come to grips with the news that the State of Florida has closed all school buildings and moved all instruction to online distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 year. While this decision is in the best interests of health and safety of all students, teachers, staff, parents, and many more, it is still tough news to hear that we won't be able to be together again this school year. Though we will do our best to continue to create musical experiences for our students for the remainder of the school year, nothing can truly every replace the experience of all being in the Band room, on stage, at D Lot, or at Showalter field together.
During this time of staying at home, it is most important that we all keep moving forward. We will get through this eventually, and to pass this time in a positive way students can musically challenge themselves in new and different ways. Most importantly, all our students need to keep regularly playing their instrument to maintain ability and skill level (while turning in assignments in a timely manner!). This may be a great time for you to go back to fundamental work, find a new method book, learn a new solo, challenge yourself to expand your range, practice sight-reading, find and listen to great artists and ensembles, or pursue one of a number of different and new opportunities. If you find yourself looking for guidance towards new challenges, or just something different to do rather than "normal, boring practicing," Mr. Smith and I are here to offer suggestions and steer you in different directions.
JAZZ ENSEMBLE I AUDITIONS - THIS WEEK
Mr. Smith and I are looking forward to hearing your auditions this week! All of you have put so much time and effort into preparing your audition, and we wish you the best of luck!

Students who are auditioning - you will receive a link in your email the morning of your scheduled audition. Please wait until your scheduled audition time to click on the link and join the audition "room."
BAND ZOOM MEETINGS THIS WEEK
We again will be hosting Zoom meetings for all students this week on Tuesday, April 21. Students - If this time conflicts with another class that has previously scheduled a meeting, please let Mr. Clemente and MR. Smith know ASAP. Otherwise, we will expect to see you on Tuesday afternoon.

INCOMING 9th GRADE INFORMATION WEBINAR and Q&A
The Winter Park Band will be hosting an informational webinar and Q&A for incoming 9th grade students and parents on ZOOM this Wednesday, 4/22, at 7 PM. Topics that will be covered include next year's Band schedule, how to register for the Winter Park Band, what classes are offered by the program, Band Fair Share, Band fundraisers, and much more! Please pass this information along to incoming Band families you know, especially if their student is still on the fence about continuing with Band in high school. The webinar will also be recorded and posted on the Band website.

From the Band Booster President
Hello band families. I hope you are all doing well. Please keep an eye on the band calendar on Charms for updates to the schedule and ways to keep everyone connected. If you have questions about band items or would like any type of support, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Clemente, Mr. Smith, me (at njstorch@yahoo.com), or any of the other band parents. We are here to help. This is generally the time of year for new band students and parents to get acquainted with the program, for all students to register, and to look at the schedule for summer and next year, so please stay tuned for information regarding all of those things, some of which might look a bit different for the time being. I imagine students and parents miss attending in-person school and band events, and I know we are all looking forward to participating in these events again.
Please encourage all families of incoming freshmen band students to “attend” the virtual informational meeting this Wednesday at 7pm. We can’t wait to see a lot of new faces and answer questions about band!
I hope you and your families are doing well. Please let us know if we can help in any way. Have a good week!

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS
Thank you to all of the students who have been diligent in keeping up with the weekly assignments. Mr. Smith and I know that there are many new challenges and seemingly constant changes that come with being at home and completing your classwork for all 7 classes each week. Now especially with all of your classes being held digitally for the remainder of the school year, it is even more important that you do not procrastinate and allow late work to build up.
If you are struggling to complete your work when assignments are due, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to help you! An issue with internet connectivity or other emergencies at home do not affect your grade, so long as there is communication with the Directors.
This is all very much different than "normal school," and especially for us in Band class when we can't all get together and be an ensemble as our class is meant to operate. In the meantime, the skills you are individually building through the digital assignments will become incredibly useful to you as a musician and help the Band as a whole. Always keep in mind, "a rising tide raises all boats".
