The 6th graders have been doing the Forward Exam and are working hard in class, as well.
We have reached the Final Four for our March Madness Book Brackets. Monday we will find out who will make it to the “Championship Game.” Tuesday I will announce the winning book for each class.
Their spelling unit this week consisted of the prefixes: -under, -sub, -mid, -super, -inter and -intra. This unit was a lot easier than the unit last week that challenged many students. Please remind your child to study these words. They can use the lists on the packet or their pretests to study. Studying will really help some of them out.
They are working hard on their book projects. These projects are due April 12th. The students need to read a book that I have approved, create a movie poster with all the requirements and type up a three paragraph summary of the book. They will present their posters on the 12th to small groups. I’ve seen some wonderful posters so far. Be sure to follow the guidelines and the rubric I have handed out..
The 6th graders are also currently working on a literary analysis. They have read and analyzed two poems for practice. Now we have moved into reading and analyzing two folk tales. Next week, they will begin to write a literary analysis comparing and contrasting the two folk tales. This can be a little difficult, but we are doing most of the legwork in class.
We have been taking notes on various vocabulary strategies in hopes they will use these strategies when testing. They will be taking the Math portion for the Forward Exam next Tuesday. Make sure your child gets enough sleep, eats breakfast and comes to school those days.
Have a great weekend!

Math News and Updates
Amanda Lois amanda.lois@yorkville.k12.wi.us
This week in math, the sixth graders have been working hard learning about mean, median, mode and range. Ask them to sing you the song that we learned to help us remember how to calculate each one! Then they got to have a Skittles treat after calculating the mean, median, mode and range of the colors of skittles in a snack size bag. We also continued our work in finding area of parallelograms and triangles. Then we moved on to finding the surface area of 3-D figures using nets. The students calculated the area of each face of the net, next they cut it out, folded it up and taped it to create a 3-D figure. They added up all of the areas of each face to calculate the surface area.
Next week we will learn about volume and then move on to the coordinate grid system. In the coordinate grid system we will be working with all four quadrants of the coordinate grid. This now includes positive and negative numbers.
Just a reminder that the students will take the Math portion of the Forward Exam on Tuesday morning. Please make sure students have a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast to help them through the morning!
Have a great weekend!

Science
We have begun our new Unit -The Restless Planet - and have jumped right into understanding the inside of the Earth! Students have completed vocabulary and it would be very beneficial to them to practice and review these new definitions a few times a week. Our first day of notes included information about the Earth’s crust, mantle and core and the differences in their composition and density. We also discussed the different percentages that each layer contributes to the Earth’s total mass. One interesting fact we found out was that the Earth’s crust is between 5km (3.1 miles) thick to 100km (62 miles) thick. That is the approximate distance from Union Grove to Chicago! Have a great weekend!
Social Studies News and Updates
Mary Niccolai mary.niccolai@yorkville.k12.wi.us
Social studies wrapped up chapter 5 this week and we began a project. This worked well since classes were disrupted a bit from Forward Exam. Each student will create a poster describing one of the inductees to the Spirit of Independence Hall of Fame. Each poster must include a biography, a picture of the individual, and a quote from the person. They must also include a list of actions and beliefs that warrant their inclusion in the Hall of Fame. People are looking at John Adams, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, Abigail Adams, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Paine, and many others. They will have their last class day to work on Friday. The posters are due next Wednesday. They can take them home to work on them starting Friday.
I am almost done grading the essays so the grades for the chapter 5 test will be on Skyward by this weekend.
Next week we begin Chapter 6. This chapter takes a much closer look at the Revolutionary War and the Patriots as they fight for independence.
Encourage your son or daughter to complete late or absent work.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend.

I am very proud of all of the students who performed! This year, 55 out 89 events received the best possible rating! Thank you to all of the parents that volunteered as room monitors and concession stand workers! Special thanks to Mrs. Grimes for coordinating the concession stand and to Mrs. Strickland for coordinating the room monitors!

Music Man Jr. Costumes - Students will need to find their own costume for the musical. I do have some things here at school, but not a lot. Students need to have their full costumes to school by April 7th. This will give us time over break to alter costumes or fill in missing pieces if needed. The musical takes place in July 1912, victorian edwardian style “titanic-like” clothing and knickers, suspenders and fedoras or kentucky derby hats are some examples.
Music Man Jr. Rehearsals - Rehearsals are running smoothly!! We continue to work on blocking. Main Cast members will have after school rehearsals starting on Monday March 27. Students received a schedule last week with dates. Cast should have their lines memorized by now!! Rehearsals are every Tuesday, Thursday and every other Friday. It is very important that your child be present during these times!!
Music Man Tickets - An order form will be going home this next week. Ticket sales start April 5th! Last year we sold out so get your tickets early!!
Students did an amazing job at Solo Ensemble. You should be proud of your performances. Way to Go!!!
