Jeffrey/Mead Team Blog
October 3-14th
Math
Number Talks and Computation groups have continued. Students are focusing on strategies that will build their flexibility and number sense.
October Calendar Grid has gotten started. In the Calendar students look at 2 dimensional views of different perspectives of three dimensional shapes and try to figure out which shapes fit based on those clues. In Collector students are weighing carrots and seeing how the weight changes based on how quickly the water evaporates. Mrs. Mead's class is continuing the September Collector which connects to our volume work and will do the October Collector in November.
Students have finished the Star Math assessment. Some students may do additional testing based on the results.

Writing
Ms. Jeffrey's class continued opinion writing with letters. STudents brainstormed a topic about which they feel strongly, identified the intended audience and wrote an opinion letter. Next up is book reviews!
Reading
Students Ms. Jeffrey's class finished Capture the Flag. Next week they will begin reading either Stranded or Restart. Our focus in these books will be analyzing and comparing characters. Assignments will once again be due on Wednesdays and Fridays. Students were very responsible about completing the assignments in the first round of book groups.
Students in Mrs. Mead's class are wrapping up Wonder this coming week. We have also been working on comparing and contrasting different versions of fairy tales. We will also work on comparing and contrasting characters from the same book and from different books.
In the coming weeks students will complete the Star reading assessment. After that, some students may complete other assessments such as the F&P Benchmark Assessment.
"What I Need" Blocks
Read Aloud
Mrs. Mead's class is reading Book Scavenger. The people who attacked Garrison Griswold have found Emily and James and started to chase them around San Francisco. James really wants Emily to return The Gold Bug to the people who work for Garrison Griswold but Emily has been refusing. James has also been frustrated because even though she said she would, Emily has not been helping James with his cipher challenge. We have discussed how due to Emily's constant moving around, she doesn't really know how to be a good friend and that James also doesn't realize how important Book Scavenger and Garrison Griswold are to her.
Science
We have continued to discuss density. Ms. Jeffrey's class learned about the effect that temperature can have on matter. They completed a Science Court.
Students in Mrs. Mead's class had the chance to make oobleck in the STEM lab. They discussed how the oobleck has properties of both a liquids and solids. We also continued discussing density when mixing different liquids.
