JAGUAR UPDATE
Sunset Valley Elementary 3/29/18
Jaguar Corner
Hello Jaguars!
- I hope everyone had a great spring break! The Johnson's took a road trip and spent some quality time together. My kids actually had to figure out what to do when the wi-fi didn't work...
- I am grateful for the teachers, coaches, church leaders, and other positive adult role models that have taken an interest in helping my own kids over the years. As 'dad', sometimes the message I share with my kids isn't 'heard' in the same way as it might be from a teacher, coach, scout leader, etc. However, what I continue to learn as a parent is that it is important to keep talking with our kids. Even when we think they don't want to listen. They are listening.
- 4th quarter is upon us and the end of the year is coming quickly!
- Just a reminder that if you are looking for summer camps, you can check out the LSR7 website for information.
- We had a great turnout for SVE Kindergarten Round Up!! We welcome all of our new lil' Jaguars!!!
- MAP Testing will be here during the Month of April! Our kids are ready and will do GREAT!! Testing will occur on the days listed at 9:15 AM. Some of the sessions begin at 10:15 AM. If your child arrives late during a testing session, they will read or do some work in the office until the test session is complete. They will make up the testing session later in the day. Here is the testing schedule.
SVE PTA
Thank you to all the volunteers and people who donated to the Carnival. We think it went well, and we hope everyone had fun. We are always looking for ways to improve and change, so be sure and contact the PTA if you would like to volunteer to be on the Carnival committee for next year!
Also, thank you to those who attended Paradise Park Community Night on Friday, March 16th. Mrs. Cook's class won a free Golden Ticket for each student by having the most attendance, and we raised $315.48.
If you have a graduating senior, PTA offers a scholarship opportunity. Please see the link on our website. The deadline is April 6th.
Please watch our website for the proposed budget for the PTA for the 2018-2019 school year. It will be posted by Monday April 2nd and we will be voting on it on Thursday, April 5th at the 3rd grade performance.
We have two board meetings left this year. We will be discussing our plans for next year - including the fundraiser and all our events. We would really love to have your input. We hope you can join us. We meet in the library on 4/9 and 5/7 at 6:00 pm. Thank you!
3rd Quarter Progress Reports!
Elementary Summer Learning Institute enrollment opens April 5
Lee’s Summit R-7 elementary students will have the opportunity to participate in the Elementary Summer Learning Institute offered Mondays through Thursdays June 4 through 28 at six elementary schools. Classes will be from either 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. or from 9:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., depending on the school site.
If you are interested in enrolling your child in the Elementary Summer Learning Institute, please mark your calendar for April 5 when online enrollment will open. Additional information about the summer sessions will also be available on this date. Enrollment closes on April 23.
Students and their families may choose from a variety of enrichment selections at the six elementary sites. Programs for students with special needs will be offered at two schools. Students from any of the 18 Lee’s Summit R-7 elementary schools may enroll in the summer program with sessions offered at the following schools: Sunset Valley, Cedar Creek, Meadow Lane, Westview, Trailridge and Prairie View. Schools offering special education programs are Sunset Valley and Cedar Creek. Transportation is provided for students living in the Meadow Lane attendance area who attend summer sessions at Meadow Lane, students living in the Prairie View attendance area who are attending Prairie View summer school, and students living in the Westview attendance area who are attending Westview summer school. Families of all other students must provide their own transportation to summer school.
This year’s Elementary Summer Learning Institute includes a new opportunity for 2018-19 kindergarten students. In the past, only students currently enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade could enroll in the summer program, meaning that incoming kindergarten students did not participate. Beginning in 2018, incoming kindergarten students also have the opportunity to attend a four-hour summer program.
Another change this year involves grade level designations for participating summer students. Previously, students remained at their previous grade level during summer school so that a 2017-18 first-grader would have remained a first grader during summer 2018. Beginning this summer, students will “roll up” a grade during the summer session so this year’s first-grade student would become a summer school second-grader.
In addition, Online Summer School will be available to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade grade students with a variety of enrichment options tied to grade-level STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning targets.
