What Are We Studying in First Grade
- Math- We are still focusing on addition and number fluency for numbers within 20. We studied number bonds: a visual that helps the child see that two small addends equal a sum. Next week I will be teaching them to pick out two different ways to make a number bond to create a sum. For example, how many different ways can you make 7? We will be working with the number bond visual to help the students with this concept. You can help reinforce this by helping your child draw out different ways to make a number less than or equal to 10!
- Fundations- This week we will be starting Unit 3 in Fundations. Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about consonant digraphs! A consonant digraph is two consonants that go together to make one sound such as "s" and "h" together make the sound of /sh/.
- Reading- Our reading groups have started! This week we will be working on answering and asking questions about non-fiction texts, discussing the differences between fiction and non-fiction, and working on retelling a story.
- Writing- We have been working on what makes a complete sentence and what is an incomplete sentence. Students made a "sentence buddy" to help them remember the components of a complete sentence! This week we will be putting together what we learned about sentences; students will be working on creating short stories focusing on tiny moments, making sure to include what they have learned about complete sentences in their work!
- Social Studies- We will be continuing our study of where we live in the world and communties. We eventually want to have children understand that different communities around the world have similarities and differences. In order to achieve that, they first have to understand what goes on in their own community! We will be having several people from our community come discuss how they help the community with the class over the next couple of weeks.
- Science- This week we will be working on how a scientist OBSERVES. We learned this key word last week and studied a cookie (the kids had a blast). Students will get a chance to observe pieces of crazy fruit and note smells, colors, looks and even tastes in their science notebooks!
Be looking for more updates next week! :)
