STEAM Color Coding - Ozobots
Literacy Corner/ Esquina de Lectura
During the upcoming weeks, your child’s classroom will be infested with books about bugs as we begin to study the lives of these interesting creatures. Students will read many high-quality nonfiction books, all within their Reading Zones. Each student will become an expert on one bug, learning its physical characteristics, eating habits, adaptive behaviors, and much more. Rigorous independent reading and discovery during this unit will set your child on their way to becoming a lifelong, self-sufficient learner. They will be able to share all that they've learned about bugs as they become authors of non-fiction books based on a favorite bug!
Grade 2: Math Mission 3: Counting and Place Value
Most children begin to understand place value using physical objects that can be counted (like grapes or fingers). This Mission expands that understanding to more abstract concepts, like centimeters, ones, and tens. Students will also expand their understanding of the base ten system with hundreds and learn counting up to 1,000.
You can help at home by:
- Asking how many ones, tens, and hundreds are in numbers that you and your student come across.
- Continuing to review addition and subtraction skills
- Helping your student begin to compare numbers by asking questions about “more than”, “less than”, and “equal”.

Our Third Grade Oakside readers will begin Unit two of the ARC Reading Program this month. To deepen our knowledge of weather and our relationship to it and to sharpen reading skills, we will be studying weather phenomena. Students will read various high-quality nonfiction books, all within their Reading Zones. Lots of successful reading practice may be the single most important thing they can do to increase their reading skills, vocabulary, and background knowledge. Each student will become an expert on one weather phenomenon, focusing on its characteristics, measurement, prediction, effects on humans, and more. Rigorous independent reading and discovery during this Unit will set your child on their way to becoming a lifelong, self-sufficient learner. We will be having a very special weatherman come visit our 3rd grade students to be a part of the growing excitement for this unit.
Grade 3: Mission 1: Multiply and Divide Friendly Numbers & Mission 2: Measure It!
Students will be working on two missions this month, the first one focusing on multiplication and division with friendly numbers, 2–5 and 10. Students will move gradually from skip-counting and arrays to using the distributive property as a strategy for multiplying and dividing larger factors.
You can help at home by: :
- Having your student set out groups of small objects in arrays (equal groups in rows and columns) and write the accompanying multiplication equation.
- Encouraging your student to practice multiplication facts for 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s until they know them fluently.
Third graders will also transition from 3 baskets of 2 apples to 3 “2s.” This Mission supports that transition by using place value strategies and the standard algorithms in an applied context: metric units.
You can help at home by:
- Asking your student to help with all kinds of measurement around the house.
- Continuing to practice telling time, and begin to ask questions about elapsed time, e.g., “How many minutes have passed since we got home from school?"
