CONGRATULATIONS TO MRS. HARMON, THE 2024 RECIEPIENT OF THE JIM SULLIVAN AWARD
Celebrating Kristin Harmon's Jim Sullivan Award
At St. Rose High School, we are proud to recognize and congratulate our very own Kristin Harmon, Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director, for winning the prestigious Jim Sullivan Award from Shore District Board 194. This award is the board's highest honor presented to a person connected with basketball who has made a significant contribution to the game in the Shore area over the years.
Kristin's journey began in New Hampshire, where she grew up with a passion for sports and healthcare. She pursued her education at Springfield College, the birthplace of basketball, and later moved to New Jersey in 2000. Her dedication to the field led her to work as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Monmouth University for two years before joining St. Rose High School in 2002.
As the Assistant Athletic Director, Kristin's responsibilities include assisting with referees, scheduling scrimmages, providing game-day support, and facilitating the Shore Board 194's use of the SRHS facility for their cadet training program. Her commitment to the game of basketball and its officials is evident in her long-standing connection with the basketball officials, which dates back to when her father-in-law, Art Harmon, asked her to speak on the importance of stretching before games.
Kristin's impact on the game of basketball and the health and well-being of student-athletes extends beyond St. Rose High School. Her expertise, dedication, and compassion have made a significant difference in the lives of many, earning her the respect and admiration of her professional peers and those she has served for decades.
In receiving the Jim Sullivan Award, Kristin Harmon is in good company with two esteemed individuals who not only received this honor but also have made a tremendous impact on St. Rose High School: Steve Gepp and Pat McCann.
Steve Gepp, a star player at St. Rose High School and later at Villanova, had a significant impact on the world of basketball. As a player during the 1948-49 season, Gepp scored a Jersey Shore record 582 points in 24 games, leading the Purple Roses to the NJSIAA Parochial B state championship. After his successful playing career, Gepp went on to become a long-time head coach at St. Joseph, now Donovan Catholic, where he won 485 games during his career. Gepp's dedication to the game and his influence on countless young athletes have earned him a well-deserved spot as a recipient of the Jim Sullivan Award.
Pat McCann, a member of the 1949 St. Rose team that won the Non-Public B state title, has an equally impressive history with the school and the game of basketball. In 1958, McCann was asked to temporarily take the position as head boys basketball coach for the 1958-59 season until a permanent replacement could be found. McCann excelled in this role, going on to become one of the Shore's most storied coaches and winning over 400 games and state championships in 1962, 1963, 1966, and 1977. McCann's teams also won state titles in 1966 and 1977, further solidifying his legacy as a coach. His dedication to the game and his unwavering sportsmanship, which included never having a technical foul called against him even while coaching for over a decade in the Jersey Shore Summer Basketball League, have earned him a place as a Jim Sullivan Award recipient.
The gym at St. Rose High School, the McCann Activities and Athletic Center, is named in honor of Pat McCann and his significant contributions to the school and the game of basketball.

HOPE WEEK MADE A HUGE IMPACT
Hope Squad: A Beacon of Support and Awareness at St. Rose High School
The St. Rose High School community has always been a place where education extends beyond academics, nurturing the well-being of every student. This commitment was vividly on display during the recent Hope Week 2024, organized by the school's Hope Squad. In this article, we'll explore what Hope Squad is, its origins, the events of Hope Week at St. Rose, and its poignant connection to the memory of Sean Culley.
What is Hope Squad?
Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program that equips students to recognize signs of distress among their peers and to take action by connecting them to the help they need
Founded in 2004, the program was developed in response to the heartbreaking reality of youth suicides within the Provo City School District in Utah. Dr. Gregory A. Hudnall, a high school principal, was moved to create a system where students could be the eyes and ears in their school, watching for warning signs and reaching out first.
The initiative began with a survey to identify approachable students who could be trained as Hope Squad members. These students would then be equipped to identify suicide warning signs and refer their peers to trusted adults. The program's success was evident when, after its implementation, the Provo City School District experienced zero suicides for nine years.
Hope Week 2024 at St. Rose High School was a dynamic and engaging series of events designed to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. The week kicked off with "Team Up Against Suicide," where students donned their favorite team jerseys, symbolizing unity and teamwork in the fight against suicide. Traditional Tuesday followed, with students wearing their school uniforms for St. Joseph's Day Mass, reflecting on the importance of faith and community support.Wellness Wednesday featured a Mental Health Fair, offering students valuable resources and information. Throwback Thursday allowed students to dress up in attire from their favorite decade, celebrating the joy of nostalgia and the importance of looking back to move forward. Finally, Feeling Good Friday wrapped up the week with a focus on comfort and self-care, highlighted by a guest speaker, Judy McCormick, who spoke about the importance of sleep for mental health.
Sean Culley
The spirit of Hope Week was deeply intertwined with the memory of Sean Culley, a former student whose life was tragically lost to suicide. Sean's legacy lives on through the CulleyStrong Foundation, which aims to continue his impact through education, suicide prevention, and mental health awareness.
The foundation's message to take the love for Sean and pass it along resonates with the mission of Hope Squad, creating a powerful narrative of hope and resilience within the St. Rose community.
Hope Squad at St. Rose High School is more than just a program; it's a movement that empowers students to be proactive in supporting their peers and promotes a culture of care and openness. The success of Hope Week 2024 is a testament to the dedication of our students, staff, and the entire school community in making a difference and saving lives. As we reflect on the events of the week and the enduring impact of Sean Culley's story, we are reminded of the power of hope and the importance of coming together to support one another.
In the video below, Sean gives his time to St. Rose's 2018 March Madness Gift Challenge. We hope the St. Rose community will now consider giving to the CulleyStrong Foundation so they can help others through education, suicide prevention, and mental health awareness.
Madeline Hoffman receives the Monmouth County Guidance Association 2024 Caring Award
Alongside friends Megan Duca and John Patterson, Madeline has been actively involved with the organization, participating in sleepout events where they sleep outside to raise awareness and funds. Their most recent backyard sleepout successfully raised over $55,000. Madeline's commitment to Covenant House New Jersey has advanced, and she now serves as a junior executive board member.
Through her involvement, she has had the opportunity to engage her school community and meet inspiring individuals, making Covenant House more than just a charity for Madeline – it's a loving community that has shown her the true meaning of giving back.

Mr. Bonelli's Class Gets a Sneak Peek of the Egypt Museum Projects at the Grammar School
Last week was an exciting day for Mr. Bonelli's class as they had the opportunity to visit the Grammar school and witness the incredible Egypt Museum projects created by Mrs. Fluhr and Mrs. Klimczak's 6th-grade classes. The students have dedicated 2-3 months to studying and designing these projects, and the results were nothing short of impressive.
The 6th-grade students showcased a wide range of creative and informative displays, from 3D sculptures to board displays and Egyptian masks. The level of detail and effort that went into each project was evident, and it was clear that the students had put their heart and soul into their work.
As part of their preparation for the big day, the 6th-grade students had a dress rehearsal, practicing their presentations for tomorrow's event when they'll share their hard work with their parents and family. The students were brimming with excitement and knowledge, and it was a joy to see them so enthusiastic about their work.
Mr. Bonelli's class was amazed to hear about all that the 6th-grade students had learned during their study of Egypt. From the history and culture of ancient Egypt to the intricacies of its language and writing systems, the students had clearly gained a deep understanding of this fascinating civilization.
The Egypt Museum project is a testament to the power of experiential learning, allowing students to dive deep into a subject and explore it in a hands-on and creative way. The students' enthusiasm and engagement were palpable, and it was clear that they had gained a valuable learning experience that they will carry with them for years to come.
We're grateful to Mrs. Fluhr and Mrs. Klimczak for their hard work and dedication in making it possible.
The Egypt Museum project at the Grammar school is a shining example of the power of experiential learning and the creativity of young minds. Mr. Bonelli's class was thrilled to get a sneak peek of the incredible projects.

Robotics Surgery
What an incredible experience for our Senior Engineering and AP Biology students! The class trip to observe robotic surgery for prostate cancer was both informative and exciting. Witnessing cutting-edge technology in action provided valuable insights into medical robotics and highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of modern healthcare. As the surgical procedure unfolded before their eyes, students saw theoretical concepts from their classes come to life in a real-world setting. 💡
Discussions about the surgery's intricacies, the precision of robotic instruments, and the collaboration between engineers and medical professionals sparked enthusiasm and curiosity among the students. Overall, it was an educational and thrilling experience, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved. Huge thanks to Neptune High School and Liberty Science Live Surgery Program for hosting us!
