SCHOOL NEWS
Bravo Falcons!
Over the weekend of January 25-26, Quail Hollow had 3 Falcons represent them for the South Central All District Honor Band Festival. Leah Harris, Charlotte Tsui, and Sophie McCollister made the All District Honor Band after auditioning with over 1,000 students in early January and were selected as the best players on their instruments from students from over 8 counties surrounding the Charlotte area. They rehearsed all day on Friday and Saturday morning with their peers, and then performed a concert in front of a packed house of spectators, parents, and directors at the L. Reeves McGlohon Auditorium in Cramerton, North Carolina.
They’ve made Quail Hollow and their families proud with their hard work, dedication, and determination! Way to go Leah, Charlotte, and Sophie!
Discover CTE
If you want to get a jump on the job, CTE offers you a pathway to that head start. Whether you’re interested in architecture or automobiles, cosmetology or computers – there’s a pathway that will allow you to acquire deep career knowledge, gain industry-recognized certifications and test-drive your career in a summer internship. Follow a CTE pathway and you’ll be ready – ready for a career, ready for a job and ready for the future.
Career & Technical Education helps prepare students who want to embark on a career trajectory while still in high school. Students can choose from 19 pathways, each with four to six sequenced courses. Some pathways can result in industry certifications while still in high school. Others provide early credit toward a post-secondary degree. All of them offer the opportunity to connect with future employers through job shadowing and internships.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools wants to ensure that every student is ready for the next step after high school, whether that step is college, career or military service.

5th Annual International Cultural Festival
Please join the QHMS staff and students on Saturday, March 9th from 1 – 3pm when we will host our 5th Annual International Cultural Festival. This festival will be held in order to raise awareness and recognize the cultural diversity that is present in our Quail Hollow Middle School through our students and families. This is a great opportunity not only to be proud of our individual cultural and ethnic heritage, but also to appreciate value and learn from those which we are not part of.
Entrance is completely free and all the family is invited to attend. If desired, you can bring a dish to share with other families. Please arrive on time since food will be served from 1:00 to 2:00. Families will have the opportunity to complete a bingo card during the event and participate in the raffles at the end of the event.
If your student or any member of the family would like to do any type of performance that day please contact Ms. Penagos in classroom C11 or pick up a flier from the main office.
We look forward to seeing you!

Help Kids Balance Their Media Lives
From phones and tablets to streaming movies and YouTube, tech and media are everywhere. Kids love easy access to TV shows, games, and information. Parents and caregivers love that kids can stay in contact while they explore their independence. But it's easy to overdo it when the phone never stops pinging and the next episode plays automatically. Families can keep media and tech use in check by following a few simple practices.

Purposity App
There is a new app CMS is partnering with that allows people in the community to assist students in need. It is a good, convenient way for people in Charlotte to help students in need if they can and when then can. It is called Purposity and it allows people in Charlotte to buy things for students in need and have it shipped automatically to the school social worker at the school where the student attends. Note: The more people in the community sign up to use the app more schools will be able to utilize it! Hear more about it from WBTV in the link below!

QHMS Wish List
The PTSA has created an online "wish list" via SignUp Genius to fill different needs at Quail. This link will stay open YEAR ROUND; we'll add to it as items benefiting the whole school are requested by staff. This is an easy way to support the Hollow with things like band-aids for the nurse's office, tissues and hand sanitizer, grade-level work/supply room items, and other needs.
We encourage you to continue to check in with your student’s teachers for individual classroom needs; those individual requests will not be included on the school-wide wish list.
PLEASE visit this link as often as you are able and SHARE with other QHMS families!
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0C4DAAAC3-qhms
- Click on the link.
- Sign up for a slot (take note of a deadline IF one is listed).
- Buy the item and send it into school within 1 week of signing up for it online.
- Drop off in the front office, where we've set up a PTSA donation box. The PTSA board will then distribute.
- THANK YOU and happy shopping!! ;)

Safety Kit Wish List
In light of tragedies across the nation and in our own school district, Quail Hollow Middle School staff have engaged in both Active Survivor Training with a CMPD officer and begun to engage in regularly scheduled tabletop drills with our School Resource Officer. The safety of our students is our number one priority and we will continue to collaborate with experts to help us be prepared in the best way possible. In collaborating with experts, we also learned about the opportunity to equip each classroom with a Safety Kit. The School Leadership Team's safety committee is seeking the help of Falcon Families to help secure items for these kits. If you can help, check out the Amazon Wish List here.

CMS NEWS & EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
2020-2021 CMS Calendar Survey
Thank you to everyone who voted for the 2020-2021 academic calendar. Calendar B showed a total of 44 instructional days for the first quarter. That was a miscalculation. The actual number of instructional days in the first quarter is 43. To gather the best feedback, Option B has been changed to reflect the actual number of instructional days, 43, in first quarter. No teacher workdays, holidays or other major events were changed due to this number.
To maintain the integrity of our survey results, we are starting the calendar survey voting over beginning Feb. 20. Voting will end Feb. 27 at midnight. View calendar option A here and option B here and click here to vote. If you already voted for the survey, please do so again. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your feedback.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Calendar Committee has developed two options for the 2020-2021 academic calendar and has launched a survey so that families, community members and employees can indicate a preference.
Calendar committee members will tally the results and send them to the superintendent, Dr. Clayton Wilcox, for review. He will make any changes that he thinks are needed based on employee and community feedback, then present a calendar recommendation to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education.
