Principals Message
Harborview Principal Mr. Jonnson:
I am also delighted to report that we have revised our daily schedule to provide more minutes per day for reading instruction.
On Thursday, Sept. 14th, our teachers, Gwenna and Ms. Byrnes accompanied 5th graders on a SAGA field trip, including a ropes course and nature walk. I am so happy to be working with tough and adventurous students!
TCLL Principal Ms. Eldri:
Gunalchéesh to our families who joined us for our first Site Council meeting! You should all be receiving school information through Blackboard now. Our school days are full of strong language and academic rigor, balanced with community relationships and authentic learning opportunities which are grounded in our Tlingit ways of knowing. We hope to see you at our TCLL Family and Community Dialogue on Monday, September 18th at Sealaska Heritage Institute’s Walter Soboleff Building. Dinner and babysitting will be provided.

Coming Up
Friday September 29th - Orange Shirt Day
What is Orange Shirt Day?
It’s a day to raise awareness of the Indigenous children who were sent away to Residential Boarding School Institutions in order to assimilate them. Please join us as we promote community healing and to recognize intergenerational traumas still affecting us today. The idea of the color orange comes from a story of Phyills Webstad. When Phyills was 6 years old, her grandmother bought her an orange shirt to wear to her first day of residential school. But when she arrived at school, they took everything away from her.. including this orange shirt her grandmother bought for her. For Phyills, the color orange has always reminded her of residential school. Nearly 150,000 children were taken away from their families, culture and language and sent away to residential schools between the 1830s to 1900s. The message that Phyills wants to pass along is that Every Child Matters on Orange Shirt Day.
Geography challenge is BACK!
Our first question was: What country lies to the north, south and east of Juneau? Answer: Canada. Our winner was Cedar from Ms. Conoly's class.
Lost and Found
Label your students' clothing and gear!
Missing something? Check our Lost and Found.
This week students from Ms. Curry's class graciously helped to organize our overflowing Lost and Found. They were able to return only 2 items that were labeled with a students' name. Please label all your students' gear and clothing.
Important pick up drop off reminder:
Blocking the drop off/pick up area with a parked car creates difficulties for other caretakers trying to enter and exit the area, and is dangerous for our students.
The drop off/pick up area in front of Harborview is for active unloading and loading only. Parking and walking away from your vehicle in this area between 7:40-8:40 and 2:15-3:15 is strictly prohibited.
If you would like to park and wait outside for your student(s) while enjoying the company of others in our school community please find parking off campus, for example 12th Street.
It's getting wet and chilly!
It's getting a little chilly outside. Please help your student(s) remember to dress for the weather. Students are outside multiple times a day for up to 30 minutes at a time. It's so much more enjoyable for them when they are dressed appropriately.
At Harborview we do not stay inside due to rainy conditions. Our policy for moving to an indoor recess includes temperatures and wind chill below 0 degrees fahrenheit and any conditions that make our playground unsafe (like ice).
Indoor recess decisions are made prior to each recess during periods in extreme weather.
