Science Challenge
Physical Changes: Changes that adjust the size, shape, or look of a substance, but the substance is still the same. (Example: Water Freezes into Ice- Ice is still water, just frozen)
Chemical Changes: Changes where one or more substances are changed into a NEW substance. (Example: Burning a log on a fire)
This offers some great discussion of things that we see every day!
Have a great day,
Mr. Griffen

Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents:
As you are aware, Governor DeWine has extended the mandated closure of all schools through Friday, May 1st. Based on this fact, we will be implementing our remote learning plan beginning on Monday, April 6th. Listed below is an overview of our remote learning plans and grading procedures per building level. Although this communication is lengthy, all you need to read are the sections that apply to your child(ren) based on their grade.
All prior communications from me, as well as all remote learning plans and resources can be found on the district website and any building websites. They are located on the mainpage under the first two “shortcut” links on the right side of every page. As a reminder, links for the remote learning plans will not be activated until April 6th at 8:00 a.m.
Our overarching focus during this extended closure is to foster remote learning opportunities so student learning continues and we reduce gaps in knowledge as much as possible, so our students are as prepared as they can be for the 2020-21 school year.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The elementary remote learning plan will detail remote learning for all five (5) elementary schools in the district and will be linked by grade-level. Each week, students will receive one Math Tic-Tac-Toe board and one English/Language Arts board (example of the front page) that have a variety of activities connected to grade level standards. Each board has a total of nine (9) squares that are designed to enrich and review skills that have previously been taught and guide new learning. When completing the board, all students should complete the center square as it has been designed to be a multistep lesson that focuses on a rigorous grade level skill. After completing the center square, students can choose two other activities on the board to complete a Tic-Tac-Toe vertically, horizontally or diagonally. In addition to the squares, we are asking that each school day, students work on Lexia or read with an adult and complete some additional math practice, as well. Each Tic-Tac-Toe board has been developed by all grade level teachers in Strongsville City Schools, so you may see a video or picture of someone other than your child’s teacher. However, your child’s teacher will still be able to help with each assignment. There are also Encore/Specials resources that will be in the links on the remote learning webpage, as well as math enrichment activities on the math boards for grades 3, 4, 5. All students are welcome to complete any activities they desire from the boards. Students in Title I, Gifted Math, English Language learners, and/or students with IEPs will also be hearing from their specific teachers as well. As a general rule, elementary students should only be spending about 1-2 hours per day engaged in remote learning experiences.
With regard to the elementary grading procedures during this closure, remote learning experiences assigned from April 6th until such time as schools are physically reopened will not be formally assessed and/or graded by the teacher. Teachers may ask that work completed be submitted in a manner that they would communicate with you, so that the teacher can provide descriptive feedback. If we return to school on May 4th, the assessment of standards/grades for Trimester 3 will be based solely on work completed during the Trimester 3 period when school was physically open for students. If we do not return to school for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, the assessment of standards/grades for Trimester 3 will not be added to the report card. Student report cards will only have standards assessed for Trimester 1 and Trimester 2.
Should your family need paper copies of your student’s remote learning experiences, each elementary school will have copies available attached to the front doors of the building. Updated copies will be available every Wednesday, beginning on April 8.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Parents of students with disabilities will be contacted by email or phone by the special education teacher to partner with you on how to best support your child during remote learning. If you have specific concerns or questions during this time you can feel free to contact your child’s teacher.
Sincerely,
Dr. Cameron M. Ryba
