GLBEC GAZETTE

March 2024 Edition
Mr. Woods' Corner
As your new Program Director, the first month at the helm of GLBEC has been an incredibly rewarding journey. I've had the pleasure of meeting many of our brilliant students and witnessing firsthand the vibrant spirit that defines our community. Your enthusiasm and commitment to excellence are truly inspiring.
As we look forward to State Testing in April, I want to remind our students of the importance of staying current with coursework. Falling behind can create unnecessary stress and impacts your overall performance. Each lesson builds on the last, so keeping up today sets you up for success tomorrow.
Please remember, you're not alone in this journey. Our dedicated teaching staff is here to support you every step of the way. Whether you're a student seeking guidance or a parent with questions, we're here to provide the support and answers you need. Our students' success is our top priority, and together we will foster a learning environment that embraces all learners.
Yours In Education,
Mr. Rodney Woods, Program Director
Spring Break
Spring Break is March 4th through March 8th. School will resume Monday, March 11th.
Career Navigation with Mrs. Gloss
On February 27th we hosted a FAFSA Workshop. It was a great event with food and a gift card giveaway. Thank you to all who participated.
If you are planning to attend SVSU in the fall as a Freshman please be sure to email your SVSU ID number, major and minor (if applicable) as soon as possible so that you may be registered for the April 5th SOAR from 9-12 pm. SOAR is free of cost and only lasts 4 hours. Please note that the traditional SOAR is 8 hours during summer months.
Tutoring
Tutoring is available across all subjects to all students taking a college course, and it is FREE at Delta College and SVSU. Parents, if your child has anything less than a B in a college course, your child should be seeking tutoring services, seeking the professor's help during office hours, and/or attending Friday College Success Classes on Delta's campus from 1:15-3:05 PM.

Science Methods with Mr. Conklin
Spring Break is finally here! I'm sure the students are absolutely ready for a break, although it feels like we just got back into the swing of things for semester 2. This week in class, we delved into the intricacies of the subtle forces that unite molecules and explored the peculiar workings of metallic bonding. Our last lab before the break involved creating a Brass alloy, a task that usually brings some excitement to the students. As we return from break, let's hope for the arrival of true Michigan spring, complete with an abundance of mud and potholes. In the Science Methods class, students will wrap up unit 5 with a couple more engaging lab activities and a final assessment, marking the end of this chapter and paving the way for something entirely new.
Great Lakes Bay PAID STEAM Summer Internship Program
Midland ACS is now accepting student applications for our PAID summer internships! Deadline is March 31, 2024. http://www.acs.org/projectseed This opportunity is open to rising Juniors, Seniors, and 2023 graduates that have taken at least one year of chemistry. There are up to 12 Paid STEAM summer research internships at area colleges/universities. First time SEED students earn $4000 during 7-10 week program. Use the link above for additional information.
English Literature and Writing with Mrs. Kojak
This month we delved into argument writing and debate. Students have been practicing building arguments, analyzing logic and reason, and completing credible research. Students worked in teams to prepare their arguments for a formal in-class debate. Topics included four-day school weeks and banning books. In addition to practicing their argumentative writing and public speaking skills, students completed an annotated bibliography to help them further evaluate the sources they found during their research. Annotated bibliographies are an assignment students will likely encounter in their college classes, so this preparation will add to their skill set as they prepare for college classes next semester.

Math with Mr. Christensen
Students in math are seeing how the techniques and concepts from one unit do not stand in isolation but carry over as essential skills for new units. As one class revisits factoring methods that have been used for years, my other classes continue to use patterns of transformations that they saw in prior units come back to relevance. This ties in with the philosophy of the class that math is to be found and used in every aspect of life. Each skill is not an independent thought exercise with no practical use but rather part of the greater logic of the world.
Communication skills are essential to math also, as those who cannot express their reasoning have little influence over their audience. We continue to work on writing convincingly in our critical thinking assignments. Students are now experienced enough with the style of these assignments to produce the best quality work of the year. I have reiterated the high expectations I have for them and encouraged them to put in the necessary time and effort. Please ask your students about their work and help keep them on task.
