NEW! Message from the Principal
Can you believe we're already a quarter of the way through the school year?? Quarter 1 is a wrap and we're excited to see our students settling back into the routines of in-person learning and the fun and rigors of middle school.
This week I hosted two Principal's Chats and was able to share some of the exciting things going on at Mesa Verde, as well as gather some valuable feedback from parents about the middle school experience. Here's a peek at some of the events we have coming up (more info to follow): Red Ribbon Week activities (Oct. 26-29), Club Rush (Oct. 27 @ both lunches - access club list here), Halloween Costume Contest (Oct. 29, see below), After School Carnival/Game Night (Nov. 12), online school merch sales, and more!
We hope you take advantage of the three day weekend with some rest, relaxation, and family fun!
Your Proud Principal,
Kellie
NEW! Meet Our Staff
Shelbey Wood - 6th grade LA/Lit, 8 years at MVMS
Hello, I grew up in Glendale, California and moved to San Diego about 25 years ago. This is my 29th year of teaching. I have taught at MVMS for 8 years and formerly taught first and second grade at Deer Canyon for 18 years. Prior to that I began my career in West Covina and taught Special Education at the elementary level. I studied at UC Riverside where I received my degree and teaching credentials. I attended graduate school at Azusa Pacific University and received my master's degree in Administration/Education.
I am married and have two sons and we reside in the MVMS community. Both of my sons, Carter (24) and Keaton (21) attended and graduated from Deer Canyon, Mesa Verde, and Westview High School. Carter is currently working as a one-on-one instructional aide for PUSD at Stone Ranch Elementary. Keaton is studying Computer Science at Miramar College. My husband is the Assistant Fire Chief for San Diego Fire Department. Our family enjoys traveling and skiing together. I also enjoy swimming, hiking, gardening, and Pickleball. I am very excited to be teaching sixth grade Language Arts and Literature at MVMS!
Caroline Crandall - PE Coach/7th Grade AVID Humanities, 7 years + 1 year long term sub
Hi there! Caroline Crandall here... PE/7th Grade Humanities teacher. I have been with MVMS for just about 7 years now. Originally a 6th grade humanities, then 7th grade humanities, then PE, and now part 7th AVID humanities and part PE. What I like about MVMS is the kindness people have for one another and I get to work with my sister! In my free time I love spending time with my family, hiking, baking, and gardening. I am proud to be an Eagle, go MVMS!

NEW! Halloween Costume Guidelines
On Friday October 29th, our ASB will be hosting the annual Halloween spirit day and costume competition. In order to make the day a success, we ask for your support by reinforcing with your student the specific guidelines below that provide greater clarity to our costume expectations. All costumes must meet Mesa Verde’s dress code policy.
Costume Reminders:
1. Costumes may not include full face masks or cover the face entirely.
2. Costumes may not be violent or suggestive.
3. Costumes may not have anything simulating a weapon.
4. Costumes may not suggest racial attitudes that reinforce stereotypes about, mock or mischaracterize a culture, group of persons, an individual person, a religion, a health issue, a disability, or mental health. We are asking students to refrain from dressing up as fictionalized stereotypes that marginalize any one person, group, or culture.
At Mesa Verde, we have respect for all people and cultures. Thank you for your support!

Did You Know…
Thank you to everyone who has donated to this year's Pledge Drive. Did you know your generous donation to the Foundation may easily be DOUBLED?! Many companies in our community have programs that match employee donations to qualified charitable organizations, such as the Mesa Verde Foundation. Please check with your HR department, or use this link to see if your company offers matching. Doubling your gift can be as easy as making a phone call or sending an email to your company! If you have any questions or need assistance regarding corporate matching, please contact our treasurer, Carolyn Russell at mvmsfoundationtreasurer@gmail.com.
We rely on our parent community to make this school everything it can be for our students, and we truly appreciate your support. Donations can be made online at https://mvmsfoundation.org/pledgedrive.html.
Thank you for all you do for our Eagles!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
No Place for Hate Club
On October 6th an interest meeting was held for students to start a No Place for Hate Club on campus this year. Students who attended or contacted Mrs. Marcotte were asked to give individual input as to which day of the week and time frame worked best for them. For the remainder of our first semester, the club will meet twice a month on the first and third Wednesdays after school (see exact dates below). We will meet from 3:15 to 3:45 pm in room 332. All students are welcome! Students who are in our ASES after school program are welcome to attend as well, just check in with ASES first. We want to build this club, our Students’ voices are important and bring forward the best ideas in how to build relationships and break down bias. Our meeting next week will focus on ideas for rolling out our school wide, No Place for Hate Pledge.

Checking Out Your Student Early
If your student needs to leave early from school, please send a note with your student. Notes should be given to the Attendance secretary in the Administration Office before school. Calling the school in advance, or sending a note, will prevent delays for you (such as trying to get your student while they are running on the lower field) and will help us to minimize interruptions to the classrooms. If you schedule a last minute appointment you may call the Attendance Hotline @ (858) 538-5692 to have an off campus pass sent to your student.
When writing a note please indicate the following:
- Your student's first and last name
- Their grade
- The time your student needs to leave school
- Whether or not your student will return that day
Please meet your child at the Attendance desk to be signed out at the time of departure. Be prepared to show your identification when checking out your child. If your student returns to school after being picked up early, please have him/her check back in at the Attendance desk before heading to class.
