Welcome Back. Welcome to 2016.
A couple of things that I have started to read (and have been really enjoying) over the break are:
- Better than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management by Dominique Smith, Douglas Fisher, and Nancy Frey
The book begins with a Frederick Douglass quote, "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." It reinforces what I'd previously read in No More Taking Away Recess and Other Problematic Discipline Procedures, classroom management is "about building relationships with students and teaching social skills along with academic skills." - Hacking Education: 10 Quick Fixes for Every School by Mark Barnes and Jennifer Gonzalez
I skipped ahead to Hack #4: Track Records - Make Classroom Management Enduring and Real with a Simple Notebook. I look forward to sharing this chapter with you. - The Innovator's Mindset by George Couros
Early in this book, I was reminded of a video (the video is linked, below; it is fun and only about one-minute long. I hope that you'll watch it) that I've previously seen. In 2016, let's all - Be More Dog!
I'm working on finishing a new post that you can read on my blog re. one of my education related New Year's resolutions.
Let's all embrace our work ahead in 2016. Let's take the time to re-establish our classroom expectations and procedures. Let's take the time to re-teach those expectations and procedures throughout the second half of the school year. Let's take the time to build positive relationships with all of our students; let's get to know their interests outside of school, and let's share with them some of our interests outside of school. And let's have fun!
