Lowell Memo: Issue #11
December 20, 2013
Published by Lowell School & the Lowell PTA
Greetings from Lowell!
As we quickly approach winter break, I'd like to share one way to get information and another way to have a voice in the future of District 200.
D200 Website
The district and individual websites have a new look. This will continue to be an excellent source of information for both district and school news. As that migration just happened this week, we are troubleshooting any broken links and formatting that did not transfer well. If you are having difficulty accessing information you need, please let me know.
Please take a few minutes to explore the new site. Some of the changes are as follows:
- The Lowell Memo is available on the Parents and Students drop-down menu or by clicking the school newsletter button on the Lowell home page.
- Some staff that previously were linked to the Classroom Pages are now found on the Student Services drop-down menu. This includes ELL, Reading, PACE, Speech, Resource, Reading Club, the Psychologist, and Social Work.
- The D200 Student Learning site is directly linked to the Lowell home page through the Student Learning button. The PTA website is also linked directly to that home page.
Please continue to provide me with feedback on what information would be helpful for you as you navigate your child's school experience.
Community Engagement
Below my letter, please find a link to the Engage 200 District Community Engagement site. Engage 200 is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the district and have a voice in future plans. Please e-mail me at kathleen.melton@cusd200.org if you are interested in attending. I would love to ensure that our school community is represented in this forum. Please also think about community members you know who do not have children in school; I would be happy to extend a personal invitation for them to join us as well.
Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season! We look forward to welcoming your children back on January 6.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
This year, the Lowell Library Learning Center (LLC) will be available to Raz-Kids students during their Recess Time (12pm-1pm) on Tuesdays from January-May, 2014. These sessions are dependent on the efforts of our PTA Volunteers. This is an exciting way for our readers to come together and share their experiences and for students without internet access to take advantage of our program. Due to alternating grade level schedules, this will also allow maintain recess in alignment with the district wellness policy.
WE ARE IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR! If you would like to volunteer, please e-mail: lowellrazkids@gmail.com. You can also fill out the volunteer portion of the registration form. Please be sure to include your name, e-mail address and phone number.
We look forward to another successful year!

Firearm Concealed Carry Act
The Firearm Concealed Carry Act, 098-0063, that becomes effective on January 1, 2014, prohibits any licensee from carry a weapon in, “Any building, real property, and parking area under the control of a public or private elementary or secondary school”. In addition, the Act requires that schools post a sign to that extent on its entrances. After the winter break, you will see signs on our district schools' doors that comply with this requirement. The signs are uniform and were established by the State. The signs will look like this:
Willow Parking Restrictions
Chess Corner
- Nikhil Cowart
- Gabrielle Horn
- Jacob Horn
- Mollie Hufnagel
- Colin Koprowski
- Charlie Letizia
- Daniel Schierhorn
- Christina Schierhorn
- Max Stankoskey
- Jordan Winter
We were up against over 10 teams in the Primary(K-3rd grade), and over 10 teams in the Elementary (4th-5th grade) divisions. Lowell team demonstrated they are on their way to becoming the future chess masters. Some of them used moves such as the "3-Peat",
only used by professionals. Lowell had an impressive day with two team trophies and an individual trophy.
- Lowell 4th place team trophy- (4th-5th grade category)
- Lowell 5th place team trophy- (K-3rd grade category)
- Jacob Horn, 3rd place trophy- (4th-5th grade category)
The team was so excited when Lowell was called up twice for the 4th and 5th place trophies. They all deserve their big wins. They did a fantastic job!
