2. "Mouth and Letter Power" - Get mouth ready to make sounds in words.
3. "Picture Power" - Look at the picture for a clue to tricky words.
4. "Tapping Power" - "Tap out" CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.
5. "Chunking Power" - Look for chunks in a word, i.e. b-at = bat
6. "Question Power" - Ask, "What will make sense with the letter sounds and picture clues?"
7. "Hopping Power" - Hop over tricky words, then go back and reread.
8. "Retell Power"-
Lastly, have your child retell the story after reading. Encourage them to tell 5 things that happened in the story using the words, first, next, then, after that, finally.

NEWS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS BELOW
Tapping Out Consonant Vowel Consonant Words
We are working hard in class to "tap out" CVC words. We use this strategy for practice with words in isolation and students are encouraged/prompted to use the strategy during Readers Workshop and Guided Reading. Please take a few moments to view the following video demonstrating how to "tap-out" CVC and CCVC words.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFuVQGwoOsQ
As you are reading with your child each night, prompt them to use the strategy when they come to a tricky word in a text. Ask them to tap out the letter sounds and look at the picture for a clue. I will also be placing a monthly list of "nonsense words" in the book baggies beginning this week. These words can also be tapped-out for practice. While these are not words encountered while reading, this is an excellent way for students to isolate phonemes and blend the phonemes together to make a silly word.
I also encourage you to utilize the Fundations Parent support resources at home. These resources provide handwriting practice, book suggestions and words for tapping out.

Additional Sight Word Resources
The students are working hard in class to recognize sight words! Please check out this blog post on many apps that can be used to provide variety to sight word practice:
http://rachelktutoring.com/blog/free-sight-word-apps/
Also, if students have mastered recognizing the sight words, they can turn their sights to writing/spelling them correctly. This is an option for nightly practice but not required. If your child chooses this option, please send in the practice paper on Friday and I will give them one star on their "Super Improvers" card!!! (Any piece of scratch/notebook paper you have around the house will be just fine! :)

Reading Resources
Starfall provides opportunities for students to practice letter recognition, decode/blend words as well as beginner reading selections.
Storyline Online is a great resource for quality children's picture books. Books are read to the children by famous actors with fabulous digital book illustrations. Storyline Online provides opportunities for questioning, conversation, and "book talks".
Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library also offers several online options for children to read and/or listen to stories. Storyplace and Tumblebooks are two such options. Sudents can use their school ID number to access online services such as Storyplace and Tumblebooks. Students can also use their school ID number to check out books from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public library. The CMLibrary is a great place to visit and find just right, beginning readers for your child!
Thank you for supporting your growing reader!
