Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
Good morning and welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your time away and you find yourself well rested and ready to level up; we missed having you all in the district.
When I got of the car Sunday morning on my way into church, my glasses fogged up! It was hard for me to see where I was going; I had to stop walking and regroup by wiping my glasses. Then, later that afternoon, as I opened the oven to look at my chicken masterpiece (yes, I cooked - lol!), it happened again. The heat from the oven fogged over my glasses; I could not see into the oven. I thought how fitting these experiences were today. As I sit here writing to you, I cannot help but relate them to our theme. How wonderful it is to have clear vision! We can can follow through on our mission when our path is charted and our vision is focused on our goals.
This year, we will continue to focus on our strategic drivers as they are guided by our core beliefs and district goals. Our mission will serve as our guide and call to action as we provide our students with a world-class education. It has been a goal of the leadership team to keep changes to a minimum, especially those related to new programs, teaching, and learning. This will give the entire team time to refine implementation of our aligned resources and an opportunity to fine tune our vision to ensure we keep our students at the center of our work.
Pirate Academy and convocation provided several eye-opening moments and many important lessons. Mr. Adam Welcome encouraged us to be our best for our students as well as to take care of ourselves physically and emotionally. If as a Pirate team member you feel you need assistance, please reach out; we are here for you.
Goal three and belief six will also be focus areas for us this school year. Safety is our number one priority. None of us can do the work required of us, and our children cannot learn - if we do not feel safe. Take note of behavior changes that range from the overt to the withdrawn. Please refer students to our counselors, if you notice a change in a child’s behavior that causes alarm; it may be a cry for help. Look for more information to come in the area of social emotional learning. We are actively looking for resources/training and are committed to ensuring our students have access to therapeutic counseling. Check out this 2 min video to get an overview of social emotional learning.

Another defining moment during Pirate Academy came during CRASE training and was driven home over the weekend as our country experienced its fourth mass shooting in 30 days. It is important for us to keep our classroom doors locked and office vestibule doors closed while children are in the building. We will work with area first responders to conduct active shooter drills within the first 30 days of school. Please take note of your school’s procedures related to hide-flight-fight strategies, exit options, and lockdown procedures
In the realm of academics, our predictions look good for this past year as they predict 3 A schools - something we have not done since 2012. You did that! As we continue to better understand the standards, we will be better equipped to support our students’ learning, and it will show in our results. Thank you for the work that was done with our children last year; it paid off! I look forward to what we will do together during 2019-2020. Have an amazing school year!
With that, I submit the Captain’s Log. #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje
