Burke County Public Schools County-Wide Spelling Bee
Jesus Saenz (Team 8-F) and Jamari Howard (Team 7-S) winners of the BCMS School Bee, competed in the Burke County Public Schools County-Wide Spelling Bee at SGA Elementary, Sardis, Georgia. Ten top spellers from SGA, Blakeney, Burke County Academy of Success, and Burke County Middle competed for the title of District Spelling Champion.
Jesus earned the winning trophy and title. The Second Place Winner was Samantha Lopez, 4th Grader, SGA Elementary. As the district spelling champions, Jesus competed in the Region Spelling Bee in Augusta on March 5th.
2015-2016 Young GA Authors Contest
The purpose of the Young Georgia Authors (YGA) writing competition is to encourage students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, The competition is sponsored by the Georgia Council of Teachers of English (GCTE) with the Georgia Department of Education support and cooperation.
On Wednesday, February 24th, writing entries from Grades 6-8 were judged and rated for : ideas, organization, cohesiveness/style, and language for the YGA competition. The maximum score was 50. One writing entry from each grade level was selected and submitted to the District Office on Friday, February 26th. The top essays from BCMS were:

On March 22nd , The CSRA RESA YGA judges selected the RESA Level Winners. Although our young authors were not among the region winners, we are very proud of them and we encourage them to continue their interest and enthusiasm for writing.
State level winners will be announced on or before 12:00 on Friday, May 13 on the GCTE website at:

BCMS District 10 Beginning Honor Band Participants
On March 19th, India Hill, Jermaine Jones, and Carter Petittwere participants in the District 10 Beginning Honor Band Clinic at Grovetown Middle School. The clinic began at 2:30 P.M. with nearly 120 beginning musicians from the CSRA and surrounding districts. Students attending the clinic were nominated by their band directors for their outstanding performance in Sixth Grade Band.
These young musicians demonstrated their talent and mastery in sight –reading by performing four musical selections with only 3.5 hours of rehearsal time. The band was led by retired band director, Gail Jarrell. Jermaine plays the alto-sax; Carter and India play the flute. They are featured in the above picture with Mrs. Jarrell.
BCMS Bands Earn Top Ratings at Large Group Performance Evaluation
The BCMS Concert and Honor Bands performed for ratings at LGPE (Large Group Performance Evaluation) in Thomson on March 17. The bands were evaluated on three stage selections and a sight-reading exercise. During the sight-reading exercise, each band is given six minutes to prepare a full piece of unknown music. Bands are scored Superior (I), Excellent (II), Good (III), Fair (IV), and Poor (V).
The Concert Band consists of 55 outstanding 7th and 8th-grade musicians. They scored II,II, I in Stage Performance, and II in Sight-Reading. Their overall rating was (II) or Excellent.
The Honor Band consists of 65 skilled 7th and 8th-grade musicians. The Honor Band scored I, I, I in Stage Performance, and I in Sight-Reading. Their overall rating was Superior.
The judges were very impressed with the discipline, focus, and playing ability of both bands. The Band Directors,
Jacques Jones and Justin Almanza share these sentiments. They state, “We are extremely proud of our students and their musical growth throughout the school year.”

BCMS Science Fair
BCMS held its annual Science Fair on February 23rd. Our first-place winners were:

All the first place projects were submitted to the CSRA Regional Science Fair in Aiken, South Carolina, which was held on March 12. We are so proud to announce that Tyler Raulerson won the U.S. Metric Association Award for “Best Use of SI [the metric system] in a Regional Science Fair.” Congratulations Tyler!
National Geographic Geography Bee
The BCMS National Geographic Geography Bee was conducted on January 29th at 8:30 A.M. in the Media Center. Charles King, Grade 8 GA Studies Instructor / Geography Bee Coordinator, was the official for the competition. Garry Fulcher (Team 8F) was this year’s winner and Murray Flowers (Team 7T) was the runner-up. It was a tight contest during the final series of questions. After the competition, Fulcher was assigned an on-line test to determine his eligibility to compete at the state level.
The test consisted of 70 multiple choice questions with a 60 minutes time limit. The top 100 scorers were invited to participate at the state competition . The cut score was 54 correct; Fulcher narrowly missed qualifying with 50 correct answers.
