Workshop Description: Ethics is a verb – it’s all about what you do and how you do it. Ethical issues span every aspect of our practice and can present dilemmas for practitioners at all levels of experience. The 2-hour seminar is being offered in partnership with the Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board.
This session will address various facets of ethical dilemmas in the school setting Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists, including practical tips to successfully resolve them. Building on feedback from previous ethics presentations and dilemmas addressed by the Ohio licensure board, we have incorporated real-life scenarios into an interactive, engaging, and informative session that allows participants to decide whether an ethical dilemma is present.
Learning Outcomes:
- Name/describe ethical issues that school based SLPs and AUDs encounter in the school work setting.
- State ethical requirements adopted by the Ohio Speech and Hearing Professional’s Board.
- Understand how to recognize and appropriately respond to an ethical dilemma.
- Understand how to implement and follow an ethical decision-making process to effectively resolve an ethical dilemma.
- List other resources/strategies to resolve ethical dilemmas.

What time should I arrive at the training site? Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the check-in process. This 2-hour seminar is being held in the auditorium at Indian Lake High School, 6210 OH-235, Lewistown, OH 43333.

What You Should Bring? Participants should bring note taking materials and writing utensils with them to the session.
Our Cancellation Policy - Cancellations must be received 11 days prior to the event. Walk-up registrations will not be accepted. Advance Registration is Required!
Weather Contingency Policy: Participants should plan to arrive unless they receive a formal “CLOSURE / CANCELLATION” email from the Midwest Regional ESC on the morning of the event.

About the Speaker: Gregg B. Thornton
On January 22, 2018, Gregg B. Thornton was appointed as the Executive Director of the Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board and is responsible for managing board operations, board directives, and licensure requirements for over 10,000 practitioners. Prior to his appointment, he served as the Executive Director of the Ohio Board of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology since March 2009. Mr. Thornton has addressed a wide range of inquiries involving ethical dilemmas. He was responsible for implementing the Board’s two hour ethics continuing education requirement which took effect in 2015. He is frequently invited to present and has co-authored on the topic of ethics and resolving ethical dilemmas related to speech-language pathology and audiology.
Mr. Thornton is a licensed attorney with over twenty-five years of experience in state government in the area of administrative law. Mr. Thornton graduated with honors from Howard University in Washington, D.C., receiving a B.A. in political science and his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Mr. Thornton is an affiliate member with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the American Academy of Audiology.
He is also a member of the National Council of State Boards of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (NCSB). In 2018, he was elected to a three-year term with the NCSB Board of Directors. The Ohio Speech-Language Hearing Association recognized Mr. Thornton in 2011 with its Award of Appreciation and in 2015 with its Advocacy Recognition Award.
