Functions Of Wetlands
By:Chris M.
Wetlands provide many social benefits
Wetlands provide many social benefits for the plants, animals, and others.Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, comparable to coral reefs and rain forests. Variety of species can be in wetlands like fish and mammals. Wetlands provide many needs for reptiles as also. Wetlands include food supply, water quality, flood control, and wildlife.
Food supply, water quality, wildlife, and flood controls
Food supply is really important for plants and animals and the others in a wetland. Insects and animals like fish eat the plants in a wetland to survive which give energy to them.Shellfishes is an food most mammals, larger fish, and reptiles eat in the wetland. Most wildlife need food in a wetland or they can die from starving.Plants and algae are given to wildlife in a wetland. Invertebrates become food in a wetland for birds, insects, and fish. Another major function is water quality.Water quality is really important for plants because plants need enough sunlight to pass through the water to grow and survive. If not much sunlight passes than plants would die and that would would harm the animals to not eat.Another function is the trees and shrubs which prevent erosion and are habitat to others in a wetland. A wetland acts like a sponge because it absorbs stuff like wave energy and floods. The last important function is flood controls and wildlife. The wetland acts a breeding area for the wildlife. The animals, plants, reptiles, and mammals are the wildlife which live there to survive in there habitat which some live under rocks. Flood control can play an important role in flood reduction. Water from drained wetlands is part of the run off they control.
Fish shells
This is a picture of a fish shell which mammals eat in the wetlands. Fish shells get eaten by reptiles as also. These are well known common in the wetlands the wild life eats.
Water quality
This picture represents water quality. It shows a cup that has clear water. Plants need good water quality to have sunlight.
Wildlife
A wetland acts as a breeding place for birds to rest and live. Some other reptiles live under the rocks in the wetland. But lots of living organisms thinks the wetland as a home.
Chesapeake Bay Watershed
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the USA. The chesapeake bay drains into the North Carolina Sounds then that one drains into the Gulf of Mexico. Wetlands make up 5% of the U.S.
