The Will to Lead
Part III: The Skill to Teach
Identifying the Audience for a Responsive Pedagogy
"A responsive pedagogy most benefits any student who is underserved. An underserved student is any student who is not successful academically, socially, and/or behaviorally in school because the school as an institution is not being responsive to the student (Hollie, 2011). We intentionally use the term underserved rather than common terms such as underachieving and underperforming. These terms imply deficits within the students themselves and put the onus on students, whereas the term underserved is based on the premise that students are clients who are not being served adequately by the school. Think for a moment about which students in your school you would identify as underserved; you are probably thinking about students of different races, cultures, and languages, or special needs students, including the gifted. What if you asked all the underserved students you have identified to come to the gymnasium? What would the group look like? The research tells us who these students are most likely to be students of color primarily. These students will benefit from a responsive pedagogy because of its validating and affirming activities that engage students and build a bridge from students' existing cultural knowledge to the academic knowledge they must master."
