Important Bus Safety Information for Parents:
Crossing the street is dangerous and cars may not stop. It is extremely important to abide by the following safety rules:
· Stay on your side of the road, 12 feet away from traffic.
· Wait for the buses to stop and extend the stop arm. The driver will hold up his/her palm signaling to wait for traffic to stop.
· Look both ways for moving cars. If a car is moving, do not step into the road. The bus driver will give a “thumbs up” and then point in the direction you will walk when it is safe to cross the street.
· Continue to look for moving traffic both ways as you walk across the street.
· Pay attention. Don’t have headphones or ear buds in. Don’t talk or text!
· Cross 12 feet in front of the bus in full view of your driver. Board or exit the bus without delay.
· If you hear the horn of the bus, look and find safety.
Parents, please follow these same steps, even if you are crossing with your child.

Our "Field of Dreams" is becoming a reality!
The weather forecast for Saturday, January 9 was cold, gray and damp. . . at best. Yet, with about 48 hours notice, we had over 30 people volunteer to be out on the playground at Fairview Elementary School helping to backfill the new wheelchair accessible asphalt pathways that have been installed in the last few months. It was one of those days, and I have had several of them since moving to Fairview, that I was filled with a sense of gratitude and privilege to get to live here in this community that feels like a family at times. We are especially grateful to T&K Utilities for providing the backfill material and to The Garden Spot for providing and installing safety fencing, bringing a bucket loader, and working well beyond the four hours we were hoping for. We also had volunteers from REACH Animal Emergency & Specialty Hospital, the Dad’s Club, and several FES families.
If you are not familiar with what has been going on at Fairview Elementary School, we are in the process of transforming the large playground into a Field of Dreams that will be accessible and inclusive to every child at the school. The first phase, Leveling the Playing Field, will have its finishing touches done once the warm weather returns. We are actively fundraising for Phase II, Sliding into Home. We are looking for corporate sponsors or other interested parties to help purchase playground equipment that is specifically designed to foster play among children of differing physical abilities at the same time. If you are interested in being a financial sponsor of this legacy project in Fairview, or if you have talents and time you would like to donate, please contact the Playground Committee at fesplayground@gmail.com, or contact the school directly at 828.628.2732. Please also see our website http://www.buncombe.k12.nc.us/Page/48223 for more information.

We hope that all of our FES families had a wonderful break. It's hard to believe we are nearly half-way through the school year!!
SAVE THE DATE:
We are REALLY looking forward to our BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN on MARCH 24!! Just like last year, students will be seeking family and friend sponsors for each lap they run. We are confident this will be a successful fundraiser for our school and the students will certainly enjoy all of the pep rallies and the Fun Run itself. With our goal met, we will be able to bring some pretty exciting improvements to our school. Thank you in advance for your support.
Additionally, March 3 will be PTA Family Literacy Night. Details will follow soon, but please mark your calendars!!
The PTA will have many openings for the next school year, both Board and Committees. Please keep an eye out for an email with more information on openings and descriptions. Or, if you'd like to inquire right away, please contact us at the email below.
