Students Learn from People They Love
Dear Cougar Family,
Courtney Wellmann shared this OpEd piece, "Students Learn from People They Love," from the New York Times, and I am passing it on to you because it reiterates why we are so focused on connecting with our students before delving into content.
The columnist, David Brooks, reminisces on his time as a professor at Yale when a moment of vulnerability on his part as the educator led to more meaningful connections with his students that semester. He then taps into neuroscience, noting: "a key job of a school is to give students new things to love — an exciting field of study, new friends. It reminded us that what teachers really teach is themselves — their contagious passion for their subjects and students. It reminded us that children learn from people they love, and that love in this context means willing the good of another, and offering active care for the whole person."
He then challenges us with his closing questions, "How would you design a school if you wanted to put relationship quality at the core?" We are in the position to answer this question each and every day at CSHS. This week, please reflect on that question. How are you designing your classroom culture to put relationships first? What school-wide processes and expectations must we continue to stay focused on in order to have students feel connected as Cougars? What things might we need to redesign?
I also want to make sure that everyone is aware of a semester-long elective credit course we are now offering, LeadWorthy (formerly Teen Leadership). This is a leadership development and character education course that is open to all grade levels, and "this research-based curriculum includes topics very relevant to the needs of current students, such as public-speaking and goal setting." Additionally, "as an outcome, students in LeadWorthy develop a healthy self-concept, healthy relationships and a sense of personal responsibility." If you know students who have untapped leadership potential, please talk to them about this course during the registration process.
May you all have a remarkable week!
As always, COUGAR PRIDE!
