Ms. Ward's First Grade
Week 26
HAPPY BIRTHDAY RANI!
Over carnival break, Rani Hemrajani turned 7 years old!! She was our STAR this week. She showered us with cake, ice cream, balloons, gifts, and cute baby photos. We are so lucky that you were born seven years ago, Rani!! Thank you to Mrs. Hemrajani and crew for bringing such a special treat to school for us!
math
We finished up unit 6 in math this week, which means that we have our unit 6 math test on Monday! I have sent home a review worksheet that will help to guide the students into "studying" for the test. If you'd like, have your child take it first without any help, and then go over the ones they missed. That way, you will be informed about their areas of strength and weakness : ) I am VERY impressed by the class on a whole in their ability to tell time to FIVE MINUTES. WOW!
science
Tis the season in 1st grade... to learn about seasons!! Although Panama does not experience all 4 seasons, we learned that many places in the world have winter, spring, summer and fall. Panama just happens to skip all the bad seasons : ) just kidding!! I am impressed with how much knowledge they all started with prior to my lesson on winter. We did learn WHY the seasons exist though-- maybe ask your first grader to explain the tilt of the earth to you!
Next week we will continue to learn about seasons as well as begin talking about severe weather storms like floods and blizzards. Brrrr!
literacy
This month is Bringing Literature to Life month!! We kicked off the month with Literacy Day on Wednesday. The whole school dressed up like book characters, and we had a big parade! We shared our very special books with one another, as well as a few parents who stopped by! On Thursday, we also read with book buddies in 4th grade. It was a precious sight to see all the first graders proudly reading their stories to the older kids. Then, when they switched roles, the 1st graders listened intently as the 4th graders skillfully read aloud. What a great start to the month!
**reminders**
MAP testing starts next week, so please be sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and a well balanced lunch to keep those brains working hard!
Mark your calendars: March 29 is Family Fun Fair! More details to come.
Enjoy the weekend!!
