Principal's Message
Time is our most precious commodity in the hustle and bustle of modern life. Filling up 100% of our time is not healthy, nor is wasting it. Summer can be a great time to find balance and pleasure in myriad activities. Spend time with friends, with family, and spend time reading, writing, drawing, and playing. Have a great summer. See many of you in the fall. And for those who are moving on... We'll see you real soon.

Mrs. Zaininger - Pre-AP English 1
Pre-AP English 1 Summer Work
Hello parents and guardians of incoming eighth grade students! My name is Shannon Zaininger, and I teach the eighth grade honors language arts class at Murphy Junior High. Eighth grade honors language arts is now called Pre-AP English 1. It is the same honors course that freshmen take at OEHS and OHS, and students enrolled in this class will earn high school credit for the course. Since it is an honors level course, the high school credit is weighted (5 pts for an A, 4 pts for a B, and so on). Upon successful completion of this class, your child will be ready to take tenth grade English 2 or Pre-AP English 2 when he or she enters high school!
Pre-AP English 1 students have a summer reading requirement to complete BEFORE the first day of school. Students must read and annotate the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The attached letter contains guiding questions to help students know what to annotate.
There is also a characterization chart that students should complete as they read (see back of attached letter). They must bring this completed assignment with them to class on the first day of school. Students may print this attachment to complete the chart, or they may recreate the chart on separate paper (handwritten or typed – either is fine!).
Here is a link to the novel on Amazon:
You do not have to purchase the novel on Amazon; any copy of Lord of the Flies is fine. If purchasing the novel presents a financial hardship, please let your current teacher know. We have 10 copies of the novel here at Murphy that students may borrow over the summer. Since it is school property, your child would need to write annotations on separate sheets of paper instead of writing directly in the book.
If you have any questions, please let me know. Have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to meeting you and your child in the fall!
Sincerely,
Shannon Zaininger
Students and Parents can find additional guidance on the assignment on this, Pre-AP English 1 Summer Reading Letter

Ms. Miller & Ms. Ramsbottom - Science
6th Graders in Mrs. Miller's and Mrs. Ramsbottom's science classes spent the final weeks of school studying ecosystems. Students created a classroom food web, simulated the effects of invasive species through an outdoor game, studied predator-prey relationships by dissecting owl pellets, and learned about parasitism and the dangers of ticks, presented by the Kendall County Health Department.
Wondering if you found a tick? Snap a pic and send it to this health department email address for a FREE identification. ticks@co.kendall.il.us

Volleyball Champion
Leah Frystak (6th grade) and her Club 1 Volleyball team are going to the 2019 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships this summer!
Not only have these girls won 1st place in 4 tournaments, but they also toughed it out to go undefeated in the Windy City Power League at 15-0 this year.
This team of girls has demonstrated commitment, dedication, perseverance and strength on and off the court. Their team name is the SkronkStrong 12U in memory of a recently passed member of Club 1 Volleyball. They also showed support for Beth Dunlap, "#BethStrong", a player of another volleyball club who passed away recently. These girls have truly shown that persistence pays off, especially if you think of others along the way.
