Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Fernandez
Ms. Fernandez is a 6th grade science teacher, the sophomore class moderator, the HIP faculty sponsor, and a spirited member of the Riviera family. She has been teaching at Riviera for the past five years, but she has been a teacher for the past 26 years! In high school, Ms. Fernandez volunteered with Best Buddies and other community service based organizations. In these organizations, she worked with students who had various types of disabilities. She ended up falling in love with teaching and being around kids. She then went to Florida International University to pursue a degree in education, and she graduated with a master's in special education and a certification to teach science classes. Ms. Fernandez has loved her years of teaching in general and especially at Riviera. She believes that the best part of teaching is seeing how she makes an impact on her students and learning what they accomplished in the years after being her students.
As a Riviera faculty member, Ms. Fernandez is not only a phenomenal teacher for 6th graders but also the moderator for the tenth grade class. During spirit week, she can be seen dancing whenever music is playing, putting smiles on students’ faces, taking silly pictures with past and present students, and encouraging her sophomores in every event. Ms. Fernandez leads one of the school’s organizations as HIP faculty adviser.
Whether dancing at pep rallies or leading the HIP Peer Health Educators, Ms. Fernandez always lightens the mood at Riviera. She is a wonderful teacher and mentor, and we cannot wait to see what else she contributes to the Riviera community in the years to come.

In the Art Studio: Art is Instrumental
This week in Ms. Parker’s 2D3D art class, students were assigned a project dealing with a fun and interesting unit in music. Thanks to the music department, students were able to learn about different wind, string, and percussion instruments' while also observing their beauty. The instrument’s unique shape, size, and materials are what allowed students to hear their different sounds. Students then had to select a single 90 year old vintage sheet music to delicately draw their instrument. This was done with hints of translucent color with chalk pastel, using an experimental technique or painting with a dry brush to apply the colored chalk dust.
Ms. Parker says, “BRAVO to all of my students; you did an absolutely gorgeous job!”

Summer at the Riv
Spring is here, which means that summer is quickly approaching! Riviera is once again offering enriching summer school programs for students to get ahead on their coursework and complete certain prerequisite classes. Our summer school program provides the opportunity for our students to take a foreign language; advance their required math, science, or history courses; or even complete required writing classes. Summer school allows students the availability in their schedules to take a more creative or diverse elective class during the academic school year. This year, our summer school program will be available to all students either on campus or online. Do not hesitate to sign up and get ahead on the required coursework.
