Rising First Graders Summer Reading
Summer 2023
Summer Reading Tips
The faculty of Wilmington Friends lower school would like to assist you in
helping your child develop a love of reading and literature. We have gathered
some titles that we know and find appropriate and rewarding. We ask that each
WFS school child entering first grade be read to daily throughout the summer
to foster their growing identity as readers.
Reading to children can be a high quality time together and it allows for the
opportunity to model engagement in and enjoyment of stories that can launch a
lifetime love of reading.
Even though children entering first grade are on a reading continuum (a few
may be reading fluently), it is important for them to be read to often. When
children are in the early stages of learning to read, it can be helpful to have
some simple early readers on hand for them to practice their new skills
(bookstores typically carry these).
The list of suggested books is extensive and multi-leveled. We have updated
these lists with some new releases.
Please allow your child a great deal of input in
choosing books (fiction and nonfiction). Children are usually able to tell what
is appropriate and interesting for them.
We wish you and your family a wonderful reading experience!
