EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of March 27, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Friends, Family, and FSA Supporters:
As we prepare for a well-deserved Spring Break, I hope everyone is able to rest, relax and prepare to come back strong for our final portion of the school year. When we return on April 10, it will be time to enjoy our final Academic Team Competitions, some end-of-year field trips, some additional lessons and, of course, a variety of project-based learning opportunities.
I'd like to send my best wishes to members of our Model UN team who will be leaving this Wednesday to head to New York. I'm sure our students will do a fantastic job and we can't wait to hear about their journey!
Last, but certainly not least, I wanted to share a friendly reminder to please order your child's yearbook so he/she can remember this very special year. The deadline to personalize yearbooks is April 3 and the deadline to order yearbooks is April 7. Details for ordering are included in the newsletter below.
As always, please feel free to see me with questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Kenan Sener
Principal

High School Science Olympiad at State
Fulton Science Academy competed in its first Division C State Science Olympiad Tournament and it was a great experience!
Fulton Science Academy students competed in the Division C Science Olympiad State Tournament hosted by Emory University last Saturday. Twenty-four of the state’s top teams qualified for the tournament based on the results of eight Regional Tournaments.
“Since this is the first year we have had a high school, this was the first year we’ve competed in Division C,” explained head coach Pam Walsh. “Science Olympiad rules allow Division C teams to have 15 members, seven of whom can be twelfth graders. Because our school is so small, we requested special permission from the State Director to include a couple of eighth graders on our team.”
With both Destination Imagination and the Math Team competing this weekend, even with two eighth-graders, FSA managed to put together a team of eleven students. Chloe R. spent the morning competing in Science Olympiad and after two events left to compete in Destination Imagination. Nevertheless, with some students competing by themselves (most events allow a team of two students) the team managed to participate in all twenty-three events. What incredible perseverance our students demonstrated!
“We had two goals for this first year,” explained head Coach Gloria Stathos. “First, we wanted to compete in all twenty-three events and second, we wanted to qualify for the state tournament. Qualifying was no easy task as there were 143 teams in the state. To place 18th in the state at this tournament was quite an accomplishment for our first year.”
“We are very proud of our students,” said Building Events coach Yasin Parlak. “We had a number of events in which we finished in the top ten. Next year we will have a more experienced team and our placement should improve. ”
The following students finished in the top ten in their events:
3rd Place Hovercraft – Vishal and Tushar (pictured)
6th Place Microbe Mission – Ethan and Sanjeev
7th Place Anatomy and Physiology – Ethan and Sanjeev
8th Place Rocks and Minerals – Nicholas and Sanjeev
9th Place Towers – Maahi and Bahriye
9th Place Ecology – Nicholas and Chaitanya
Thank you to all of our students, parents, and coaches for all of your efforts, not only this weekend but every weekend!
Mathletes win Varsity level Tournament
Congratulations for placing in the Top 10 individually
- 2nd Place- Vishaal R
- 4th Place- Charlie F
Other team members include Peyton L and Tyler H.
"Our team was comprised of one 9th grader and three 8th graders, so the results are particularly impressive for a varsity level competition that is typically made up of 11th and 12th graders," said coach Duzyol.
Way to go, guys!!!
Blank Family Foundation Visits FSA to Discuss STEAM Education
Formed in 1995, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation promotes innovative solutions to transform the lives of youth and their families, seeking results that move communities beyond what seems possible today. One strategic funding initiative is their emphasis on the expansion of STEAM education in the greater Atlanta area, including the Pipeline Project.
Over the past decade, the Foundation has invested nearly $10 million into efforts to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods on the west side of Atlanta. To further its work in additional areas of need, the Foundation has created the Westside Neighborhood Prosperity Fund, a $15 million long-term commitment to invest in catalytic projects that will ignite positive change and transform both people and place in Atlanta’s Westside communities.
Mr. Blank, chairman of the Foundation, co-founded The Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement retailer, in 1978 and retired from the company as co-chairman in 2001. Through the Foundation and his family’s personal giving, Mr. Blank has granted more than $300 million to various charitable organizations.

Students Raise More than $1,500 for St. Baldrick's Foundation
We are happy to say that FSA raised $1,584 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Our student council members did a great job motivating their peers to raise money for such an important cause. The student council members shared information with their homerooms and encouraged everyone to purchase St. Baldrick’s shirts and to donate money to the cause, which aims to eradicate childhood cancer.
As promised, if the school raised $1,500 or more, Mr. Parlak agreed to shave his head. Please stay tuned for more details on this event!
You can learn more about this organization as well as continue to donate online. https://www.stbaldricks.org/ Thank you to everyone who made this event such a success!

Club News
ADVANCED BAND Club
Advanced Band’s preparations for the spring concert are underway! Students continue to work hard as they lear new musical concepts and techniques through more challenging repertoire. Students are very excited to demonstrate all that they have learned in the coming months!
Advanced Orchestra Club
The music making at FSA is running full speed ahead in the Advanced Orchestra Club. Students of all ages come together on Tuesdays and Fridays to rehearse as a string ensemble.
FSA's young musicians have been working hard on music from Handel’s "Water Music," Walock's "Capriol Suite," Vivaldi's "Spring," and Leyden's "Serenade." Our students are being exposed to a variety of styles and techniques while learning the standard repertoire.
The Advanced Orchestra Club is full of dedicated, enthusiastic, and talented string students. You will be seeing more of these students at the Spring concert!
Fitness and Fun pre-k
In fun and fitness, we are dedicated to staying active and engaging in fun during club time, whether it is inside the classroom or outside in the sun. We love our group exercises that keep us moving and working hard. Here are some pictures of us showing our best moves.
Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
