Safety Lessons & Upcoming Drill
Dear King Parents and Caregivers,
As previously shared, this year we are introducing safety training lessons and drills for staff and students. These trainings were created in partnership and collaboration between the Departments of Health and Wellness and Department of Safety and Security, with valuable input from the Department of Special Education.
The lockdown drill at King will be on, March 21st. On the day of the drill the following will happen…
- The morning of the drill building admin will tell students during morning announcements that there will be a practice lockdown drill that day
- At the start of the drill building admin or support staff will say over loudspeaker…
“We are going to practice our lockdown now. Teachers know what to do. All students need to listen to their teachers during this practice”
During drill teachers (with their students) follow the lockdown procedure as outlined in the lockdown lesson
During the drill admin walk the building, checking to make sure doors are locked properly, and make note of areas that are not locked down, or if students are in the bathroom
Once the drill is done, Admin will get back on the loudspeaker and tell students and staff that the drill is over and thank them for participating and follow up on spaces that were not locked down.
King students have been given the lockdown lesson previously. This and all safety lessons were created to be developmentally appropriate and trauma informed using resources from Safe and Sound Schools. Our focus is to ensure that students understand safety procedures, know that adults are there to help them, but not to have in depth conversations about potential emergencies. Family Resources: We encourage you to discuss safety topics with your child at home to ensure they have the knowledge and skills needed to navigate potential emergencies. Here are some resources that you may find helpful: Sesame School: School Safety Drills (English and Spanish) Healthy Children.Org What Parents Need to Know (English and Spanish) National Association of School Psychologists (English/ Spanish/ Portuguese) Thank you, King Administration
In case you missed it, update from Mr. Bergeron
Family Pickup/Drop Off Reminder
If a bus is stopped in front of the building letting students on/off of the bus, they will have their stop sign out. It is illegal to pass the bus when the stop sign is out. As always, please use caution when driving on school property and be sure to pay careful attention to adults directing traffic.
