-Registration forms for wristbands were sent home with your youngest or only student. This is our ONLY large fundraising event for school benefit and our PTO does a phenomenal job preparing for this event. Please consider donating your time and helping run some games or food and raffle tables. Sign up using sign-up genius here. Also, we are collecting $3.00 from all junior high students as a donation towards supplies for the event. Please have your child give the money to their homeroom teacher. Lastly, there is a 2:2 basketball tournament available to 5th-8th grade students from Union Grove, Raymond, and Yorkville. Sign-up sheets and more information are attached to this Skyward email.
Other Reminders:
- Chromebooks should be charged every night to ensure the battery lasts throughout the day!

Welcome Back! We are off to a great start this year first learning about the metric system and how to make conversions. Students went for the gold in our Metric Olympics activity where they practiced making measurements using the metric system. We moved into the scientific method this week, learning the steps involved and the scientific way to write a lab report. The week ended with a lab that helped us decide which paper towel is the most absorbent. Students followed the steps of the scientific method and wrote their first lab report of the year! Next week we will move into the first unit in life science which defines the characteristics something must have to be considered a living thing.
Have a fantastic weekend!

Welcome back, it’s great to be working with your child again this year. In 8th grade we focus on “Civics” which is basically how our government works. We will be looking at the different governments and the branches that make up each government. Along the way we will take current event items and use them along with the objectives we are covering. This year will be fun because we have an election in the fall. New this year is geography Friday, we will take Friday to work on geography skills that we might have missed over the last few years. Please encourage your child to check the google calendar every night to ensure all work gets done. Thanks Mr. Johnsen

Intro to Algebra spent the first full week reviewing fractions, decimals, and percents. We also spent three days on fall MAPS testing. This fall score will be used as a baseline for the year. The next round of testing in January will measure for growth. We will start on our first unit Monday. We will explore precision, real numbers, and exponents. Please sign the parent letter and return with your son or daughter. Have a great weekend.

Algebra spent the first week wrapping up a lot of previous math concept to prepare for Algebra. We reviewed integers, fractions, percents, probability, and mean, median, mode, and range. This review helped prepare them for the first round of MAPS testing. We will begin chapter 1 in Algebra after testing. The first chapter examines precision and conversion. Please sign the parent letter and return with your son or daughter. I am looking forward to a great year of math. Have a great weekend!

Over the last couple of weeks the 8th graders have learned how to create a positive learning environment. The students participated in a variety of getting to know you activities, which included Growth circles, Linking Up, and sharing a Cultural Artifact. The students are well on their way to creating a safe, comfortable environment for all.
In Physical Education the 8th graders have been participating in a cooperative games unit! We have had a lot of fun playing odd ball tag, omnikin tag, omnikin ball, human hungry hungry hippos, yoshi, and great island movers, all while accomplishing the main objective of learning how to work with everyone in our class. We are off to an amazing start to a wonderful year!
