Week of October 26, 2015
Principal Points
CMS had a great week!! We have had some great successes with the CMS Band earning a national award. A 6th grade CMS student showing her goat at several shows earning Grand Champion and winning scholarship money along with other prizes. Great things are happening at CMS!!
Monday begins Red Ribbon Week. The PAL's have put together a great week of additional learning and fun for the students at CMS. Each day of the week will have a dress up theme along with things to do and learn regarding saying no to drugs. Parents, we are asking for your help to ensure students arrive to school dressed for the theme while still meeting the student code of conduct for dress code. Below is the flyer showing the theme of each day.
Have a fun and safe Halloween on Saturday!!

Attendance Tips
ABSENCES
If a student is absent from school a parent should call attendance each day 817-305-4904 to report the students’ name and reason for the absence (personal or illness). If the parent forgets to call you may send a note with your student the day they return to school. Please understand that absences (personal or illness) can cause the student to have to do seat time to ensure credit is earned. Absences covered by a doctor's note will not count within the seat time calculation, so you may also have your physician fax a doctor’s excuse to 817-498-9764. Students need to come to attendance the day in which they return to get an admit slip before going to class.
***If the parent does not send a note or call the office your student will have an unexcused absence.
If you think your student was marked in error, please call me or have your student come by the attendance office the next morning and we will begin the verification process which requires a teacher’s signature.
CHECKING IN
Students arriving to school after the school day has begun MUST check in through attendance office before reporting to class to obtain an Admit slip.
When checking in the students need the following:
1. A note from a parent indication that the parent is aware that their student is checking in late, and reason personal or illness
OR
2. A documented note from a doctor’s office excusing the absence.
CHECKING OUT
Students MUST have a parent come in to the school to check them out. Please allow us plenty of time to locate your student as students in athletics or lunch may be particularly hard to locate. You may call ahead of time to let me know what time you will be here to pick up your student.

Band
Last Spring two of the pieces performed by the Honor band were submitted in the National Wind Band Honors competition.
Earlier this fall we received a letter which read in part:
"Colleyville MS Honor Band has been selected as a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project.
Additionally, Anne Larimer was recognized as an outstanding soloist.
On Saturday, October 17, 46 students from the CMS Bands competed for a position in the All-District Band. To audition students had to perform 2 Major scales and the chromatic scale from memory, play portions of two prepared pieces followed by sight reading. Mr. Schmidt and Ms. Jones are very proud of all the hard work these students did preparing for this event, most of these students will also continue to advance to Region and Seventh Grade select auditions in November.

FFA
Danielle Mason represents GCISD and Colleyville Middle School by showing on the Grapevine-Colleyville FFA Show Team. Throughout the year she will represent CMS across the state of Texas. This is Danielle's 3rd year of showing show goats and she works very hard to do her best in and out of the barn.
In the last few weeks Danielle has represented CMS at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, The Heart of Texas Fair in Waco, The Covington Classic in Hillsboro, and The East Texas Show Star Series in Nacogdoches. She has competed with kids across the state and is making GCISD proud. This past weekend she won Grand Champion Goat in ring A, Grand Champion Goat in ring B, and Grand Champion Intermediate Showman! COLT CREW
The Colt Crew is made up of CMS dads whose mission is to meet and greet as many students as possible on Friday mornings so the kids can start their day off in a positive way with a handshake, smile, pat on the back and "have a great day" greeting! That's it….very simple.
This program provides a way for CMS dads to 'give a hand' with the kids at school. At the same time, they get to meet key CMS staff members and interact with other CMS dads.
The program is modeled off the successful Grateful Dads program at Grapevine High School that has already spread to Heritage Middle, Colleyville Heritage High, Timberline Elementary, Cross Timbers Middle, and Grapevine Elementary.
If you are interested in be part of the Colt Crew, please email Mindy McClure, CMS VP of Volunteers, at cmsptavoluntr@gmail.com.
Nurse Martin Tips
As Texans we know a thing or two about heat, but do you know about this kind of heat?
FEVER
Causes of Fever
A part of the brain called the hypothalamus controls body temperature, which usually varies throughout the day from the normal temperature of 98.6 F.
In response to an infection, illness, or some other cause, the hypothalamus may reset the body to a higher temperature.
Although the most common causes of fever are common infections such as colds and gastroenteritis, other causes include:
Infections of the ear, lung, skin, throat, bladder, or kidney
Conditions that cause inflammation
Side effects of drugs
Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease
Hormone disorders such as hyperthyroidism
Illegal drugs such as amphetamines and cocaine
Call 911 if the person is:
Unresponsive
Wheezing or has difficulty breathing
Appearing blue in the lips
Having convulsions or seizures
Speaking in a confused or altered way
and seek emergency help if:
A fever combined with a stiff neck or headache
Temperature above 105 F
Sudden onset of rash
A fever is a common sign of illness, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, fevers seem to play a key role in fighting infections. So should you treat a fever or let the fever run its course? Here's help making the call.
These recommendations are for otherwise healthy people — for instance, those who are not immunocompromised or taking chemotherapy drugs and haven't recently had surgery.
The body's defense mechanisms seem to work more efficiently at a higher temperature. Fever is just one part of an illness, many times no more important than the presence of other symptoms such as cough, sore throat, sinus congestion, fatigue, joint pains or aches, chills, nausea, etc.
Children
2-17 years Up to 102 F (38.9 C) taken rectally for children age 3 and younger, or taken orally for children older than 3
What to do
Encourage your child to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Medication isn't needed. Call the doctor if your child seems unusually irritable or lethargic or complains of significant discomfort.
2-17 years Above 102 F (38.9 C) taken rectally for children age 3 and younger, or taken orally for children older than 3
What to do
If your child seems uncomfortable, give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others). Read the label carefully for proper dosage, and be careful not to give your child more than one medication containing acetaminophen, such as some cough and cold medicines. Avoid giving aspirin to children or teenagers. Call the doctor if the fever doesn't respond to the medication or lasts longer than three days.
Adults
18 years and up Up to 102 F (38.9 C) taken orally
What to do
Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Medication isn't needed. Call the doctor if the fever is accompanied by a severe headache, stiff neck, shortness of breath, or other unusual signs or symptoms.
18 years and up Above 102 F (38.9 C) taken orally
What to do
If you're uncomfortable, take acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or aspirin. Read the label carefully for proper dosage, and be careful not to take more than one medication containing acetaminophen, such as some cough and cold medicines. Call the doctor if the fever doesn't respond to the medication, is consistently 103 F (39.4 C) or higher, or lasts longer than three days.
