Member Spotlight: Helen Bradley
Meet Helen Bradley! She has been a member of garden ministry for 2 years and a parishioner at St. Michael’s since 1999. Helen also assists with the second Sunday morning collection counting, clothing ministry, and ladies bazaar. She graduated from the University of Dallas in 1976. Upon graduating Helen began her teaching career at Nimitz high school. She went on to teach for 40 years in the same classroom! Helen has been retired for two years and is enjoying taking an evening yoga class at North Lake college (M/W 7-8p if interested!). Her favorite thing about the garden is “finding everything hiding under the leaves” during harvest. “Weeding is necessary but harvesting is fun!”. Helen also helps water, plant, set produce out, take photos for the newsletter, and clean up tables after Mass. Thanks Helen for all of your hard work.
Bad Bug of the Week: Colorado Potato Beetle
These guys attack potatoes, have decimated our eggplants, and will also eat tomato and pepper plants. You've probably seen both the adult and the larvae which appear to be two different insects, but they are the same. (Click link below for photos of larvae vs adult)
Also, we are noticing that some of the bugs are developing resistance to our pest control measures. "Resistance develops more rapidly to an insecticide when that insecticide is used repeatedly as the only control measure. Repeated use of one class kills susceptible beetles, leaving those that are resistant." https://entomology.ca.uky.edu/ef312
Additional bug info:
We will see a rapid decline of the squash and zucchini plants. The vine borer bugs are inside the vines so you won't see them but they quickly kill the plants.
