CHARACTER CORNER
A conscientious person recognizes the difference between right and wrong and acts accordingly.
“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Bumpus Family,
Face-to-Face:
I am SUPER excited about the scheduling changes we made to decrease our number of close contacts to a positive COVID case. Yes, we have had to quarantine students but the numbers have decreased, in just four days, by 82% when compared to the average number we were sending home. So far, so good and mission accomplished.
Students, please do your part by distancing and staying home if you do not feel well. Parents, please continue to take your child's temperature each morning. We are having students who do not feel well checking out during 1st or 2nd period. Please try to catch this before your child leaves home. This is not the season for "try to make it through the day, honey." We need your help here.
F2F and Virtual:
Half-way Day is coming Friday, Feb. 12th. This day is half-way through the 3rd nine weeks. Parents and students are encouraged to take a look at INow on this date to determine student progress.
Pink Shirt Week is coming February 22 - 26, 2021. We're asking everyone to "Leave Your Mark With Kindness." T-shirt sales will open up soon. We are using the same design as last year.
6th and 7th graders will receive their Course Requests sheets on Monday, Feb. 22nd. Stay tuned.
The opportunity to sign up to take a "Self-paced Elective" during Activity Period will be available Wednesday, Feb. 24th.
Stay tuned for more information on changing Learning Options for 4th nine weeks. The district has not released a date yet.
The Bumpus Science Fair is around the corner. If you would like to contribute prizes for the top three, honorable mentions, and/or student swag bags, contact Carol Lollar, clollar@hoover.k12.al.us
Peace,
Dr. Tamala R. Maddox

NEWS FROM OUR COUNSELORS
LET'S CELEBRATE NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK! Feb.1 - Feb. 5, 2021!
School counselors are highly educated, professionally certified individuals who help students succeed. An integral part of the total education system, school counselors help students form healthy goals, mindsets and behaviors. School counselors work to maximize student success, promoting access and equity for all students. As vital members of the school leadership team, school counselors create a school culture of success for all. School Counselors help all students apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills, and plan for postsecondary educational and career options. Appropriate School Counselor duties include providing individual student academic planning and goal setting, school counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards, individual and group short-term counseling to students, referrals for long-term counseling support, collaboration with families/teachers/ administrators/community for student success, advocacy for students at 504 plan and IEP meetings, data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges, and finally, School Counselors act as systems change agents to improve equity and access, achievement and opportunities for all students.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS REDUCED
Change in Community Service Hours
Due to COVID restrictions we realize community service hours are limited. Dr. Maddox has graciously allowed us to reduce the number of hours required for this school year. Students who complete 30 hours or more between May 1, 2020 and May 1, 2021 will receive a community service medal at the end of the year. Please remember community service is unpaid volunteer work that helps a citizen or the community. Service hours may not be during school hours or supervised by a parent.
NEW COVID CLOSE CONTACT QUARANTINE GUIDLINES
INFORMATION FROM OUR SCHOOL NURSE, MRS. SCHMITH
Parents, please remember, it is very important to call the health room if your child has been exposed to or is positive for Covid 19 as soon as this information is known. This will help determine if your child needs to stay at home and for how long and if anyone in their class will need to stay home from school as well. All information that is discussed and obtained will be kept confidential and not disclosed to anyone. (except Dr. Maddox, Mrs. Phillips, HCS lead nurse and Health Department (if necessary)) without your permission.
Please see link below for guidance when your child has to be home due to COVID.
You can contact the Nurse Schmith in the health room at 205-439-2230 or email at mschmith@hoover.k12.al.us
Thank you for allowing us to keep your child safe and healthy while at school.

ATTENDANCE - MRS. PHILLIPS
Attendance questions? Please email Mrs. Phillips at aphillips@hoover.k12.al.us or call (205) 439-2268
· A parent/doctor note is still required within three (3) days of returning in order to excuse an absence or check-in/out and can be dropped in the excuse boxes in the main lobby or throughout the school. Please include the student’s full name on the parent note.
· ANTICIPATED ABSENCE FORMS - If it is necessary for your student to be gone from school for such events as family events, trips, dance recitals, travel sports, etc., it is necessary for them to complete an Anticipated Absence Form and turn it in within 3 days of the absence, so that the absence may be excused. This form is available on the Bumpus Middle School website, or in the 2nd floor office.
There is a section on the form to be completed, with the reason for the absence, and signed by the parent, then the student fills in his schedule and obtains the signatures of his teachers, and submits it to the 2nd Floor Office for administrator approval. Approval is based on the student's grade averages and current attendance record. After the signature is obtained, Mrs. Phillips in the 2nd office will enter the absence into INow. Please note: if the student only plans to be gone for part of a day, he or she needs to enter the time of checkout, and get the signatures of only the teachers whose classes they will miss. Also, there is no need to obtain signatures from virtual teachers, (although they should be notified by email of the absence and the form emailed to Mrs. Phillips).
CHROMEBOOKS
CHROMEBOOKS
Students Tip: Make sure your Chromebook is updated.
How to UPDATE CHROMEBOOKS:
1. Click the bottom right corner of the Chrome OS desktop (It shows the time).
2. Select the Settings icon (It looks like a gear).
3. Click About Chrome OS (bottom left).
4. Click Check for Updates.
5. To apply the update, click the arrow icon and select Restart to Update.
You may be able to fix some Chromebook problems yourself. Watch this video for great tips and save yourself a trip to the school and a week of downtime.
BEFORE you consider bringing your Chromebook up to the school for repair, keep in mind a few important details:
The Chromebook repair process will take longer than usual due to the precautions our staff will take to stay safe. This includes a quarantine time period before we pass it off to the technician.
Only critical repairs will be processed at this time (as in, the Chromebook doesn't work and learning can't take place). Unnecessary or uncritical repairs will be sent back to the student.
After completing the Chromebook repair request, you may drop off your device at the front desk during school during office hours.
