ALICE drill
The Tewksbury Public Schools’ District Security Team, in partnership with the Tewksbury Police and Fire Department have carefully planned a series of training for students in the A.L.I.C.E. Emergency Protocol. You can view more information on A.L.I.C.E., including our own student-created A.L.I.C.E. training videos, at: https://www.tewksbury.k12.ma.us/general/a-l-i-c-e/
Please know that before the drill, your child will have received age-appropriate A.L.I.C.E. Emergency Protocol training through the storybook “I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared” by Julia Cook and the A.L.I.C.E. Training Institute. After the training, students complete a series of comprehension questions and activities. We realize that you may want to discuss the information presented to your child, therefore, I have included the follow-up questions for your review below.
Much like we have practice drills for bus evacuation, fire emergencies, and lockdowns, we are planning a practice drill to simulate the implementation of these emergency protocols. The practice drill for our school will take place on Thursday, November 14th.
While we hope to never have to actually use the A.L.I.C.E. emergency protocols, preparation and maintenance of the safety and security of students, staff, and all related members of the Tewksbury Public Schools is our number one concern. Please feel free to contact your child’s school if you have further questions regarding the A.L.I.C.E. protocol.
Questions used by teachers after an ALICE drill
TURN AND TALK: DESCRIBE EACH PART OF THE A.L.I.C.E. PROCESS.
WHEN AND HOW IS THIS (THE ALICE PROTOCOL) DIFFERENT AND/OR THE SAME AS OTHER EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS WE PRACTICE (FIRE, BUS EVACUATION, ETC.)?
IS SCHOOL THE ONLY PLACE WE COULD USE THE ALICE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL? WHY….?
THINK ABOUT THE LOCATION OF OUR CLASSROOM. WHAT EXITS WOULD WE BE ABLE TO PROCEED TO?
WHAT ARE THE 2 RALLY POINTS (or SAFE PLACES TO RUN TO) WE WOULD USE IN THE EVENT OF AN EVACUATION HERE AT SCHOOL?
PLEASE NOTE; IN THE EVENT YOU CANNOT GET TO ONE OF THESE RALLY POINTS, YOU WANT TO KEEP RUNNING TO A LOCATION FAR FROM DANGER.
FOR YOUNGER STUDENTS: IF YOU WERE TO RUN TO A SAFE PLACE OTHER THAN THE RALLY POINTS, HOW COULD YOU LET SOMEONE KNOW WHERE YOU ARE? (Please discuss this with your parents.)
LOOK AROUND THE CLASSROOM. IN THE EVENT OF A LOCKDOWN, WHERE MIGHT WE HIDE TO GET OUT OF SIGHT?
WHAT OBJECTS MIGHT WE USE TO BLOCK or BARRICADE THE DOOR?
If we absolutely had to….WHAT OBJECTS MIGHT WE USE TO COUNTER OR THROW AT THE “INTRUDER” HE/SHE GETS INTO OUR ROOM? (AS A LAST RESORT)
DO YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS AND/OR CONCERNS ABOUT THE A.L.I.C.E. EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS?
Parent-Teacher Conferences
North Street PAC
- This was the most successful Penny Wars anyone can remember. $3712.91 was raised for the school, which is simply amazing! Thank you to all the families who donated.
- The BookFair is coming! The BookFair is a wonderful opportunity for students to purchase books to enhance their home libraries - and convenient, because it is set up in the North Street library. The BookFair will run from Monday, November 18th - Wednesday, November 20th, and will be open during parent-teacher conferences. This year, families have the option to create an eWallet for students, which is like an online debit account. Please check the PAC newsletter for details and a schedule to volunteer - they need help!
- At our November meeting, I submitted a request to purchase some sensory materials for our students. All classrooms have "Calm Corners," which is a semi-private area students can use when they feel the need to self-regulate. My request was voted on and approved, and we ordered some fidgets, theraputty, noise-canceling headphones (with disposable ear covers). These items are much appreciated, and will help round out what teachers already have. Thank you!
American Education Week
- 3rd grade: Tuesday 11/19, 10:15 - 11:00
- 4th grade: Tuesday 11/19, 11:15 - 12:00
This is a wonderful opportunity to work with your child during school, strengthening the connection of your investment in your child's education. Because you will be actively involved in the learning activity, siblings are respectfully requested to not attend.
