What's Happening This Week?
We have a number of events happening this week and we want to make sure you know what is happening and when. 1. Read Across the World Week (Read Across America and World Languages Week)--This week, we will highlight both of these events in our school to raise awareness of the value of reading across all languages. I am so amazed at the literacy instruction that happens every day in our English, French and Spanish classes. Research supports learning to read in a second language enhances learning to read in the first language. I often get asked if English language arts teachers are able to "cover" all the reading and writing skills our children need to learn. The truth is that reading and writing instruction occurs throughout the day in all our classes. On Tuesday night during our Choice Tour, Mme. Lopes and Sra. Kiker demonstrated well how they incorporate literacy instruction in their daily lessons. (Activities for each day this week are listed below.) 2. Scholastic Book Fair--We want to be sure you have easy access to great books for your children. Our Book Fair will be open during the day until 6:00 PM Tuesday through Friday and until 7:30 PM on Wednesday during the Art Show. (Details and links can be found below.) 3. Schoolwide Art Show--Will be Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 PM. Our kids need to know that they are artists and they will have their artwork displayed in our Cafeteria and PE Room Gallery. You can park at our Caswell or Cherry Road Entrances and enter at either set of doors. We will open the gates to our kindergarten playground so you can walk straight into our cafeteria that evening. You can purchase the framed artwork that evening but also know that it will be sent home at a later time. (Again, details are below.) 4. Bus Driver Appreciation Week--Would you be able to put 40-50 kids behind you and expertly and safely navigate a thirty foot vehicle every day? It is no easy task. Our drivers are vitally important to ensuring the safety and security of our children every day. Please encourage your child to express his appreciation to our drivers for their dedication and hard work. Bus drivers are the first and last people who see our children each day and they make a huge difference in their lives. Let's give them a big round of applause and thanks. 5. Last Day to Apply for School of Choice--Please, please remind friends and neighbors that the application window closes Friday. All rising kindergarten students who have siblings in the program must have a choice application completed by Friday in order to be assured a spot. Thank you for all the ways you support your child and our school. We hope you will have fun this week as we emphasize different aspects and interests of our children.
Mr. Maness, Principal
Family Matters (for our Staff)
1. Tuesday Afternoon's Faculty Meeting--All certified staff will meet at 3:00 (location TBD since Book Fair is in Media Center) to hear the Bond Referendum Update by the Central Office. Mrs. Futrelle will meet with 3rd, 4th and 5th French and Spanish teachers afterwards to go over administration instructions for STAMP testing. Related Arts and Resource/Support teachers will still attend their district PLC's.
2. Instruction Rounds--Our district staff will come and do observations and provide feedback to us on Wednesday, March 4 from 8:00-10:00 AM. They may observe PLC meetings if you have yours during this time as well. Please be sure not to schedule anything for that day.
3. Lockdown Drill--Is coming by the end of the month and will be coordinated with Sullivan. Be ready. When we do this, as always, think about what goes well and what needs to be improved. The goal of all drills is to develop flexible thinking to make the wisest choices in any safety situation.
4. School of Choice Application Window Closes Friday--Please help remind families and remember that rising kindergarten students who have siblings already in the program still need to complete a SOC application.
5. Bus Driver Appreciation Week--Is this week. Please take a moment to express appreciation to them and remind our kids to do the same. It is a tough job and we have great drivers.
6. Clover School District Visit--Will be Friday from 8:30-11:00. We will do a presentation and they will tour the school. They are doing strategic planning for the future and want to consider language immersion as a potential option for them in the future.
5. York County Education Association Retirees' Meeting--Will be Monday at 10:30 at CP. They will have a presentation and then will tour the school. We may visit your classroom, depending on what they want to see.
