Women who are pregnant and battling with epilepsy must be very careful when taking seizure medications. One particular medication many use in Ireland is Valproate. This drug is prescribed to manage Epilepsy and Bipolar Disorder. Pharmacists has issued that this drug can cause birth defects.
Many women in Ireland, especially those who have been taking seizure medications since they were a child, were not warned about the affects to their babies. Why wasn't this told?
There are more women who are upset knowing this now and they have a child diagnosed with Autism or learning difficulties. Many mother's are saying the drug Valproate and some others are "poisonous." The drug Valproate did not give warnings about this medication until 2015. Now, there's about 20,000 children in the UK that has been affected by this drug.

My name is Abrielle and I have epilepsy. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 2 years old. Before I was born, I had an in-utero stroke and a very difficult delivery. I was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck and had meconium aspiration syndrome. Throughout my childhood, I was taking carbatrol—the extended release tablets. I took the medication by pulling the pill apart and sprinkling it on a spoonful of applesauce. After a while being six to eight years seizure-free, my doctor took me off of the medication.
By 17 years old, I started experiencing these “weird” sensations that were coming constantly. Knowing about my health condition, I did some research on epilepsy symptoms and found this article online. When I read the article, all of the symptoms were those that I was experiencing. I talked to my doctor about it and he placed me back on carbatrol then admitted me into the epilepsy monitoring unit.
During the six days I was in the EMU, my doctor finally told me that I have left temporal lobe epilepsy. Since then, I have tried multiple medications to control my seizures. On some occasions, I was taking three pills twice a day. Nothing really worked. I have taken keppra, carbatrol, and lamictal together twice a day.

As I've received many letters, emails, and messages on social media from survivors like myself, there are so many teens and adults battling with depression. Some who battles with epilepsy or seizures tend to be judged by many. Whether it's from classmates, co-workers, or maybe even family. This can cause depression.
I once thought I had a normal life. Even though I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 5, I felt I was living a normal life. I did whatever I wanted to do like any "normal" human being. Having seizures during elementary school, no one looked at me differently. My classmates and teachers actually helped me and had a concern. Seeing what others are experiencing now, it's completely different and it does bother me.
My depression came from the aftermath of the tragic car accident I had. Being diagnosed with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), I really didn't want to accept it. After being tested and the doctors advising me of this, I just felt even more different. And I did question, "Am I the chosen one?"
