Good Afternoon Emerson Families,
Update on Remote and Hybrid Learning
On Friday, October 9th, additional information regarding our transition to hybrid learning, along with your child’s cohort group was sent to families via email. We are very excited to be welcoming kindergarten and 1st grade students in person beginning the week of October 19th. Please contact me at jsuchy@bsd100.org with any further questions, concerns, or feedback. This week on Wednesday, October 14th, we will send out a video presentation to all families in English and Spanish regarding our transition to hybrid. We will then offer a follow up question and answer session on Thursday, October 15th at 3:30. You will be able to log in to this session securely using your child’s iPad through the Clever platform.

Hybrid Learning
October 9, 2020
Good Morning Emerson Families
We are excited to welcome our students back to Emerson with our Hybrid model while continuing our remote model for families that have requested this. As Dr. Havis shared last week, we will begin our transition into Hybrid Learning the week of October 19th for our Kindergarten and 1st Grade students. We have broken those grades into three cohorts based on the parent/guardian survey results. The red cohort will attend school in person on Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM. The blue cohort will attend school in person on Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 AM-11:30 AM. The green cohort will continue to attend remotely. All students will attend remotely on Mondays. Students will be able to check in from 8:30 to 8:50 on days they attend in person. Any student that arrives after 8:50 must check in at the Emerson/Heritage campus main office. Please make sure your child arrives on time so that they can complete their check in with our Emerson staff.
All students will receive their cohort information through email this afternoon. If you have any concerns with the cohort assigned, please email me directly at jsuchy@bsd100.org so that we can discuss further.
Based on parent and teacher feedback, we believe it's best to move forward with our current classroom assignments. Therefore, all students will be staying with their current teacher. Teachers will be teaching both hybrid and remote students throughout the morning and all students remotely in the afternoon.
Please read through this important information regarding Hybrid Learning:
Self-Certification
Parents/Guardians must self-certify their child(ren) on an App that District 100 will be using this school year before you drop them off at school. More information will be sent out soon regarding how to access this application on your computer, iPad, or cell phone. If you do not self-certify your child, we will not be allowing them in the building. We will have a space outside on the playground where students will sit, supervised by one of our Emerson staff members, while we call the parent to self-certify their child before they can enter the building. Please make sure you self certify your child each day.
Temperature Checks
All students will have their temperature checked at the door before entering the building. Any students with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will not be allowed to enter the building. They will be supervised in the playground area until we can get in touch with a parent/guardian to come pick up their child. I cannot stress enough how important it is to not send your child to school if they have any COVID symptoms. If your child has a fever, please do not give your child Tylenol or Ibuprofen and send them to school. Please keep them home and notify our secretaries.
Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures for Hybrid Students
I am respectfully asking parents who walk their child/children to school to not congregate at the front of the school or playground/field area. Please wear a mask while on school grounds for the safety of our students, families, and staff. We need to make sure we are socially distancing our students at all times and need to get them to their designated entrance areas for temperature checks and self-certification verification. We cannot have parents congregating in large groups on school grounds. I appreciate your help with this. Staff will be available to direct students to their designated entrances.
Grade-Level Entrances
Our staff will be directing our students to the following entrances below during Hybrid arrival. Students will be checked in by staff members and asked to wait on a “dot” until the check in process is complete. For the first couple weeks, we will allow parents and students to stand on the dot together. I ask that you only bring the necessary family members to arrival time. After the first week, students will enter the building immediately after their check in. Parents will not be allowed in the building to support with arrival nor will visitors be allowed in our school at this time.
Kindergarten students will enter the building at our playground/field entrance.
1st grade students will enter the building at our Clinton entrance by our drop off lane.
2nd/3rd grade students will enter the building at our courtyard entrance by our speech office.
4th and 5th grade students will enter the building at our courtyard entrance by the Heritage Middle School gym.
If you are not sure where your child should line up, we will have staff outside to greet our students and direct them to where they should line up. Our staff will know exactly where your child needs to go. Please ask us if you are not sure.
Once students enter the building, they will head straight to their classrooms. There will be staff in the hallways to help direct students to their classrooms.
School Supplies
Each day your child is attending in person, they will need their iPad. They do not need any additional items, as the school will provide school supplies while your child is in attendance. Each child will have their own bin of school supplies in the classroom that will be on their table daily. Bins will be labeled with your child’s name and all materials will not be shared with others.
The Classroom
Teachers have been working hard to set up a classroom space that is inviting, while also making sure all social distancing guidelines are being followed. Due to the IDPH (Illinois Department of Public Health) and ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) guidelines, we will be maintaining 6 feet social distances in the classrooms. Students are expected to wear masks at all times while in the building. We will be taking mask breaks outside. Class sizes are currently on average 6 students.
Dismissal Procedures
We will dismiss students in a manner that will allow them to social distance as they are exiting the building. Staff will be assisting students with exiting the building. Any student that receives busing will wait for their bus while social distancing. Walkers should go straight home.
Breaks
Students will be taking breaks throughout the day to take their masks off, get some fresh air, and move around outside. It is hard to expect children to sit for two and a half hours with a mask on and without a break. We realize this and will be getting our students outside for some fresh air.
Breakfast and Lunch
We will be providing breakfast for students in the classrooms. Students will grab breakfast when they arrive and take their masks off to eat. If you do not want your child to take off their mask in the classroom, they are encouraged to eat breakfast prior to coming to school. Students will also have the option of taking breakfast home with them instead of eating in the classroom. The lunch program will be a grab and go process. We are still allowing students to come to school with water bottles for when we take breaks outside. Although drinking fountains will be closed, the water filling stations at the fountain will be open.
What’s Next?
Please look for a video presentation that will be shared in English and Spanish next Wednesday, October 14th. There will also be a question and answer session available for all parents and guardians next Thursday, October 15th at 3:30p.m. Please reach out with any additional questions.
Thank you for your continued partnership, support, and feedback!
