FROM PRINCIPAL BRUCE C. SCHMIDT, JR.
As we enter the final days of the 2018-19 school year I have taken some time to reflect on what has been accomplished. There is so much to be proud of at Sam Barlow High School.
On Thursday, June 11th, we will celebrate our senior class at the Memorial Coliseum for Barlow’s 50th Commencement Ceremony. Not only is this a historic event for our school community, it is also a notable accomplishment for our seniors. The Class of 2019 has been a great group of students who have made Barlow proud on so many occasions. Whether through individual or class successes, the Class of 2019 will live in our memories for years to come.
As we proudly send off the Class of 2019, we are also beginning to become excited about the choices that our 9th, 10th, and 11th graders have made during the forecasting season. We have seen an increase in the numbers of students taking Honors, Advanced Placement, and College Credit Bearing courses next year. We could not be happier about the high expectations these students have for themselves and the education they want to experience. We have also seen increased numbers in our Career and Technical Education classes. The updated shop spaces have piqued student interest and they are benefitting from our top-notch facilities. On a final note, next year we are offering the opportunity for juniors and seniors to go to our feeder elementary and middle schools to learn about the education profession through the Cadet Teaching Program. Students in this program will partner with a master teacher, support student learning, develop and deliver lessons, and learn about the teaching profession. This will be an outstanding opportunity for all involved and we are thrilled to be “growing our own” at Sam Barlow High School.
Our student athletes and performers did not disappoint during the 2018-19 school year. All but two of our programs qualified for the state level competition, girls water polo won a state title, our musical Mamma Mia performed at the state Thespian festival as the featured act, we had two National Champion female racquetball players, and our girls cross country team tied for first with a team GPA of 3.9, and a myriad of students will be performing and competing at the collegiate level next year. There are simply too many top finishes to mention in detail. Throughout each season, our Superfans supported their fellow students, enjoyed the excitement of high school events, and our community enjoyed our renovated gym. It was a great year for the Bruins.
Over the course of the year we have managed a major construction project. We have had to share classrooms, work though parking issues, navigate tight hallways, and lost common spaces making our halls a bit more cramped during lunches. However, we have made it through the year. We can now see the products of our struggle as the stadium and track are near completion, the auditorium will be finished soon, much of the new wing is in the final phases of construction, and students are now using our renovated courtyard. The finishes are amazing, the school is taking shape, and by next fall we will open 25 new classroom spaces, new commons areas, a fully renovated and updated auditorium, and enjoy what the students, staff, and community have supported. What a series of amazing accomplishments.
While there are only a few days left in the school year, now is the time to coach your student up regarding finishing strong. There is still work to be done, but we are pleased with the work that has been completed and excited about what is ahead of us. Finals will be given during the week of June 10th through our traditional half day schedule. Please work with your student to ensure that they are studying and preparing for their exams. There are few things that match up to the feeling of completing crushing a final exam. Help them experience that feeling.
I wish you all a very happy summer, thank you for your ongoing support, and take some time to congratulate your student on all the things they have done well and celebrate the accomplishments they have experienced. Go Bruins!

ACTIVITIES
Parking Passes for 2019-2020
Parking at Sam Barlow High School is a privilege and requires a permit. Due to extremely limited space, parking passes will only be sold to qualifying Juniors and Seniors in late August. Passes will be sold in the Student Management office to students who are good attenders, have no outstanding fees or fines, and hold a valid driver’s license and insurance.
NOTE: Students who have less than an 85% attendance rate will not be eligible for a parking pass.
Guidelines and applications will be available on the school website in early August.
Attendance
In order for students to reach their full potential in the classroom, they must attend school. We want all students to attend at least 90% of all school days. Students should only miss school if they have a fever, have been vomiting, have a medical appointment, or a family emergency. We fully understand that students will sometimes miss school, but limiting the number of missed days is important. Students can’t learn unless they are in class. If we have more students attending at a higher rate, we can also increase the success of our students and our graduation rate.
Please enjoy the start of the second semester. We hope to see you at a school sponsored event or activity. It is always a great experience to see our students competing and performing as it really fosters a sense of community.
