Nurse Notes
September 2018
New Beginnings
I hope that you were able to enjoy the beautiful summer spending time with family and friends. Now it's time to journey in to the sometimes crazy, overwhelming but always exciting, routine of school days. As I reflect on my 20 years working in school health, I realize how fortunate school nurses are to have a fresh start with the beginning of each new school year. I'm getting to know these wonderful students at Liberty Elementary School and of course, their supportive parents and families.
Health Screenings
As per Texas State Law the following screenings will be done at Liberty Elementary School:
Vision and Hearing screenings will be conducted by me throughout the school year beginning this month. All Discovery Academy, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students, as well as any student new to LISD, will have their vision and hearing checked. If your child wears glasses, please remind him/her to wear them every day. You will be notified if your child does not pass their screening
Scoliosis screening for 5th grade girls will take place in the fall semester and for any girl turning 10 while in the 3rd grade. This is a new state mandated schedule this year so if you have questions, please let me know. Permission slips will be coming home soon, so be looking for them in your child's school papers. You may opt out of this screening for your daughter, or choose to have your family doctor perform the screening. Please make sure to let me know if your physician has already screened your child so I can put it in your child's health record.
**I will conduct screenings by parent request for any child in any grade at any time. If you have a concern about your child's vision or hearing, come talk to me.
Asthma and Prevention
Anyone notice the cooler temperatures outside? The upcoming fall weather will bring about new allergens and other aggravators of asthma!
If your child has asthma, please bring their inhaler and breathing treatment medications, so that we have them readily available. Asthma flare ups are preventable and can be the cause of a lot of missed school!
Head Lice 101
NOBODY PANIC! We have had no reports of head lice here at the school, but just in case your children bring home unexpected guests, here's a little information to make it easier on them and you. Just click on the links!
As always, feel free to contact me any time you have questions or concerns about your child.
I am here to partner with you to make sure your child receives what they need to succeed in school.
