Schumacher Library Think Tank
Fall 2016
Welcome!
Shark Studio - New and Improved!
Our custodian, Mr. Gossett put in LOTS of time this summer to make some big improvements to Shark Studio. First, he removed all of the carpeting so we can feel less guilty about making a mess! Then, he took out the counter tops that lined the walls and welded them together to make new shelving to help store our projects! (CRAZY!) Then, Mr. Gabriel helped us buy some new industrial furniture and the results are AMAZING. Next time you're in the building, stop by and see our new space. I promise you'll be impressed!
During library specials, students will have the opportunity to create, build, design, test, program, and INQUIRE! We are so excited about the opportunity students will have to challenge their thinking and work on building a growth mindset - where EVERYTHING is possible.
In order to help grow our MakerSpace, we need donations from you! Please consider sending the following items with your students.
We are in need of recyclables like:
- Paper Towel Rolls
- Toilet Paper Tubes
- Cereal-sized boxes
- Egg Cartons
We are in need of craft supplies like:
- Yarn
- Crochet hooks/ Knitting Needles
- Glue
- Tape
- Ribbon
- Fabric
- Glue guns
We are in need of new or used toys like:
- TinkerToys
- Legos
- K'Nex
- Wooden Blocks
Please feel free to send in supplies as you come across them in your home. (I did some cleaning this summer and found lots around my own house that I have been hauling in a little at a time.) We will need new supplies all year long.
BIRTHDAY BOOKS!
This is a great way to keep adding great books to our collection and celebrate your student at the same time! Kids for years to come will know that your child helped bring a great book to our library. In addition, the funds raised through the Birthday Book program will help us fund more books for our library and more supplies for our Shark Studio Makerspace.
Huge thanks to all the families who have already participated in the program this year!
For more information, check out the Birthday Book flyer below OR email Mrs. Bright.
ROBOTS are HERE!
During the year, each grade level will have a unit of library specials devoted to coding and computer programming using these robots! This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for our students! Besides being really fun to use, programming and coding help teach our kids grit, perseverance, and logical thinking skills. We learn how to be better communicators and collaborators while we're coding. These are powerful life skills that will help us no matter what career path we travel in the future.
We look forward to our Schumacher STEAM night in the Spring when parents and family members will have the opportunity to see our robots in action!

Specials Enrichment - In Full Swing!
As we shared last year, our Specials classes will operate on a four day rotation. Each week, students will attend specials classes on the same day of the week to help students and families know what to expect each day. This schedule will be set to typically occur Mondays-Thursdays. In the event that we are not in session on a Monday, students will attend that specials class on Friday of that week. On school weeks when we have five attendance days (most weeks), Fridays will be an opportunity for students to attend a Specials Enrichment class. These classes will change on a quarterly basis and provide opportunities for students to explore areas of the specials curriculum at a more in-depth level. This year, third, fourth and fifth grade students will have the opportunity to choose their enrichment classes for each quarter. Other grade levels will attend each special for one quarter as part of the Friday rotation.
Here is an example schedule:
Teacher A (Grades K-3)
Monday - Library
Tuesday - Art
Wednesday - Music
Thursday - PE
Fridays of 5 day weeks - Enrichment (Quarter One: Extra Library, Quarter Two: Extra
PE, Quarter Three: Extra Music, Quarter Four: Extra Art)
Teacher B (Grades 4-5)
Monday - Music
Tuesday - PE
Wednesday - Library
Thursday - Art
Fridays of 5 day weeks - Enrichment (Selected by student preference
survey. Student may choose the same enrichment special a maximum of two quarters) For example: Johnny chooses Art, PE, Music, and Music.
