Kindergarten Registration
All children who will turn five before Aug. 1, 2024, are eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2024-25 school year. Our day-long registration opportunity was last week, but you can still have your child screened during any of the WSD registration dates. Stop in the office Monday-Friday 7:15-4:00 to register your incoming kindergartner!
Focus School Software Coming Soon
In case you missed it in the January Inside the WSD, we're Transitioning from SIS K-12 to Focus School Software. Next year, tasks such as completing forms, viewing grades, and checking lunch balances will be done on the Focus School Software platform rather than on Tyler SIS K-12. Here's a quick update on what you need to know. Be on the lookout for additional information coming soon!
WSD Code of Conduct Update
In December, WSD BOE updated the Code of Conduct around Discriminatory Conduct and Speech to overtly address discriminatory, insensitive, demeaning verbal, written, pictorial, or symbolic language or gestures based on a protected class (race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, & genetic information). The District shared this change in the Board Meeting Report following the revision, and we have since reviewed expectations with students. View the comprehensive document. A copy of the updated Code of Conduct is available on the WSD website.
St. Charles County Library Partnership
St. Charles County public school district students have automatic access to library materials and online resources through the St. Charles County Library. This year, our families were provided the opportunity to opt out of this automatic access when completing annual forms at the beginning of the year. If desired, parents may opt out by working with their school librarian mid-year.
School Donation Bins & Dumpsters
DRE is among several schools with donation bins located in their parking lots. These bins are for the sole purpose of collecting the named organizations specified items. Please be sure to read the information on the donation bin to take note of the items that they are requesting, prior to dropping off your donations in the bins. For the safety of the students and staff, we ask you place all of your donated items inside the donation bin. Do not leave your donation items outside of the bin. We appreciate your help in keeping our campus clean and safe for everyone.
Trash and recycling dumpsters are not for public dumping. We thank you in advance for not using our bins for your disposal.
AMI Days
We have used four of our District's six built-in snow days this school year, we wanted to share the next steps in case we surpass the maximum number of allotted snow days in the coming months.
DESE allows school districts to count up to 36 hours of instruction through Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI), such as virtual learning or assignments to be completed at home, during emergencies, or extended closures.
Our District has not used AMI for weather-related closures in the past, but if we exceed our six built-in snow days this year, the WSD will utilize AMI to keep students engaged in learning and prevent extending the school year into the summer break. On AMI days, families and staff will be notified through the regular district communication channels (phone call, text, social media). Student attendance will be recorded on days when AMI is assigned and will be documented by the completion of assignments and turning in activities. Assignments will be turned in either through Canvas or by returning them to their teacher on the next in-person learning day. Educators will be available electronically by email during AMI days for guidance with instruction.
Discovery Ridge will be providing detailed instructions to families, so you can start making plans in case we pass up our sixth snow day this winter. Please work with your building administration and teachers to address any questions.
It's time to order you DRE Yearbook! All orders are due by February 23! Use the QR Code on the flyer to place your order.
DRE is competing against 5th Grade to see who can collect the most can tabs!
Fun Fact!!
1 Tab= 1 Inch Long
1,280 Tabs= 1 Pound
63,360 Tabs= 1 Mile
What does it take to help families?
136 lbs. of tabs will house a family for one night at the Ronald McDonald House in Missouri. That means, 950 lbs. of tabs will house a family for a whole week at the Ronald McDonald House!
Don't forget your water bottle!
Personal water bottles are highly encouraged; please send one with your child.
