What We're Learning
NWEA - Dyslexia Screener
All 1st grade students will take the NWEA dyslexia screener on Tuesday. A letter went home about this screener last week. Please contact Kate Reeder (assistant principal) with any questions you have concerning this screener.
CKLA Knowlege (Reading):
Unit 2
We finished up our study of the human body this past week. The students loved our end of unit wrap up where they became doctors working in operating rooms. Not 10 minutes after being in the "operating room" I heard a student say, "I don't think I want to be a librarian anymore. I want to be a doctor now!"
Make sure your child shares their anatomy diagrams with you. They are super proud of them!
Unit 3
In this unit, students will be introduced to themes in fairy tales and folktales through stories from different lands or countries. Students will identify story elements, including characters, setting, plot, and conflict. The students will also focus their writing on the retelling of stories that they hear. They will also practice sequencing events and comparing the similarities and differences in stories throughout the domain.
Skills (Phonics):
This week we will finish up our review of basic code, tricky words, and nouns. The students will also continue to use their coding skills and knowledge of tricky words to help them with reading the stories in their reader. I will also be testing students on all the tricky words from this unit. Please help your child practice thier tricky words.
Unit 1 Tricky Words:
a, I , no, so, of, is, to, all, some, from, word, are, have, were, one, once, do, two, the, who, said, says, was, when, why, where, what, which, here, there
Bridges (Math):
Unit 2, Module 2
This module maintains a focus on addition and subtraction strategies and emphasizes solving for an unknown. The students will be discovering a relationship between addition and subtraction through fact families. The students will also be working on writing story problems.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
On Tuesday, October 3rd at 8:00AM, a parent-teacher conference sign-up will be sent out on Parent Square. Parent-teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, October 26th. This is an e-Learning day for the students.
I am required to meet with a parent for each student, so please be sure to sign-up for a time to meet with me. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions about the sign-up. I am looking forward to meeting with each of you!
Halloween Party
Mrs. Frey has been working hard planning our "spooktacular" Halloween party. She has many fun things planned, but we are in need of some donations to make it all happen. Please be on the lookout for a donation sign-up on Parent Square being sent out today (Friday 9/29) @ 6:00PM.
Our Halloween party will be on Tuesday, October 31st. Students are allowed to wear their costumes on this day, but I would recommend your child wear their costume over thier clothes in case they get uncomfortable and want to take their costume off. Your child needs to be able to use the bathroom in their costume without help. No scary masks or weapons are allowed.
Book-It
On Monday, your child will be coming home with a Book-It information sheet & tracking calendar. The Book-It reading program runs (monthly) from October - March. The students will get a new tracking calendar each month. The goal is to have my students read daily (at least during the school week). Every day that they read, they should color in the picture for that day on the calendar. At the end of the month, your child needs to return the filled out calendar (tracking sheet). I will give each student that reads throughout the month (does not have to be every day) and returns their tracking sheet a coupon a for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. This is an optional reading program. It is NOT mandatory.

Johnson's Farm Field Trip - Oct. 5th
On Thursday, October 5th, we will take a field trip to Johnson's Farm Produce. Please make sure your child has the following:
1. Sack Lunch - The students will be eating their lunch in the classroom on this day. Hot lunch will NOT be available to purchase on this day (due to the time we will be eating). The lunch box does NOT need to be disposible since we will be eating at school. Students may bring a special drink, sweet treat to eat, etc. in their lunch on this day. I know a "special lunch" is always a fun part of a field trip!
2. Appropriate Attire - We will be outside, on a produce farm. Please make sure your child is wearing comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather that day.
Since our lunch will be much later than normal on this day, I will be bringing Goldfish for each child to snack on during the field trip. There is no need to send your child with a snack on this day.
National Bully Prevention Month
October is National Bully Prevention Month. Our school's theme is "Put Bullying to Bed." Students are encouraged to wear pajamas every Monday during the month of October to support this cause.
