Kindergarten Corner
Week of July 20th
Welcome to Kindergarten!
Welcome back to the Canton Public Schools second edition of the Kindergarten Corner. This summer is an excellent opportunity to enjoy time outdoors, go to the beach, and read a lot. What are some ways that you are enjoying the summer months? In this edition, you are going to get some information on the importance of phonological awareness and the role it plays as a precursor to reading, cool playgrounds to explore around town in Canton, and an update on the district reopening plan for the Fall.
I want to challenge each Kindergarten family to read as many books as you can this summer. It is okay if it is a book you have already read. Rereading books is a valuable practice for kids. It helps to build print awareness, the understanding of text features, your child's vocabulary, and so much more invaluable reading skills.
Well, I hope you enjoy this edition of the Kindergarten Corner, and we hope to see you soon.
Learning to Read.
What is Phonological Awareness?
Phonological awareness is the ability that an individual has to recognize that words are made up of sounds and the ability to manipulate those sounds. Phonological awareness is critical for learning to read any alphabetic system. In Kindergarten, your child's teacher will work to develop your child's phonological awareness via explicit phonics and phonemic awareness instruction.
An easy way you can begin to work on your child's phonological awareness at home is to expose your child to as many books as possible. We have linked below some user-friendly and free resources to get you started at home to support the development of phonological awareness in your child.
